Multisector collaboration Forming a partnership of: • non-profit organizations • private organizations • public organizations, and • community members The purpose is to solve problems that impact the whole community.
Characteristics of multisector collaboration • Based on cooperation, not competition. • Allows ordinary people to be decision-makers. • It can be messy! • The investment of time and resources is great, but so are the rewards.
Is your community ready for multisector collaboration? • Is there a clear need for it? • What is the level of trust among the different groups and sectors? • Do people agree on what the problem is, or will the problem need to be defined ?
First steps • Train leaders in all sectors. • Identify a facilitator. • Find the necessary information to understand issues and possible solutions. • Promote community empowerment.
Continuing a multisector collaborative • Identify stakeholders • Commit to collaboration • Establish ground rules • Teach process skills • Build trust, learn process skills, and explore beliefs • Identify problems • Clarify a vision and develop a mission statement • Keep process open; get input from community • Create options for solving problems • Formulate goals, objectives, and an action plan • Implement action plan • Evaluate the results • Celebrate all successes • Continue the collaborative community
