  1. Adapted from “Why Isn’t My Giving Working? The Four Types of Giving” by Jesse Duplantis Giving God’s WayPastor Timothy HinkleMarch 3, 2013 Alms

  2. There are four types of giving in the Bible. Most people know them all, but get them all mixed up: • Tithe (given to God) • First Fruit (given to God) • Alms (given to man) • Seed (given to God) Introduction

  3. Three of these go to God, and one goes to man. • Most people understand the alms, struggle with the tithe, don’t believe in the first fruits and they think that the seed is a “gamble”—a shot in the dark. Introduction

  4. Psalm 89:34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Introduction

  5. Malachi 3:8-12 8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. The Tithe

  6. 10Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. The Tithe

  7. 11And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saiththe Lord of hosts. 12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts. The Tithe

  8. The motivation to pay your tithe is obedience • The tithe is a Divine connector to the blessing • What blessing? • The ability to get “stuff” (money, food, health) • The ability to keep “stuff” • Protection from the devourer The Tithe

  9. Genesis 1:28 King James Version (KJV) And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. The Tithe

  10. Be fruitful—always producing • Multiply—always increasing • Replenish—fill and refill • Subdue—control your environment or your environment will control you The Tithe

  11. God gave the blessing before the tithe (Gen 1:28). Then He gave the tithe in BOTH the OLD and NEW Testament. • Tithing is the way for recession or depression to bypass you The Tithe

  12. Tithing holds God to His promise to rebuke the devourer for your sakes (Malachi 3:10-11) • I’d rather have 90% of my money be blessed than have 100% be cursed. The Tithe

  13. The motivation for First Fruits is generosity, gratitude and trust Proverbs 3:9-10 King James Version (KJV) 9 HonourtheLord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: 10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. First Fruits

  14. First Fruits shows God that you are not in love with money. That’s why He trusts you with it. • If you get a raise, give it all to the work of the Lord (the first time) • First Fruits shows your gratitude to God for the extra blessing that He has bestowed upon you. First Fruits

  15. God responds with generosity towards you! • God gives you a choice on First Fruits: • Give it to the house of God • Give it to the priest (pastor)—God’s proxy (representative) First Fruits

  16. First Fruits is an expression for your love for His word. • First Fruits IS in the New Testament and there are 31 references to the Bible First Fruits

  17. Romans 11:16 King James Version (KJV) 16 For if the firstfruitbe holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. • The gentiles are the branches. First Fruits

  18. Romans 11:16 King James Version (KJV) 16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. • The gentiles are the branches. First Fruits

  19. This is what most people do. • The motivation for alms giving is compassion and sympathy. • The alms is the only offering not given to God but given to mankind. • Alms is given in secrecy to protect people’s dignity in their crisis. Alms

  20. Matthew 6 King James Version (KJV) 1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. Alms

  21. Most ministries show you their alms giving • You lose your blessing when you tell people about your alms giving • We should ALL help the poor and do it in secret to preserve their dignity. • The rate of return on alms is reimbursement Alms

  22. Proverbs 19:17 King James Version (KJV) 17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. • The rate is dollar for dollar on alms giving because its giving to man, not to God, but God will repay what you give. Alms

  23. The motivation for Seed giving is faith and reward • Read all of Mark 4 Seed

  24. Understanding the Law of Sowing and Reaping Mark 4 King James Version (KJV) 1And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. 2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine, 3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: 4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. 5 And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: 6 But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. Seed

  25. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. 8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. 9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. 11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: Seed

  26. 12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. 13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? 14 The sower soweth the word. 15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. Seed

  27. 16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; 17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. 18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, 19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. Seed

  28. 20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred. 21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? 22 For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. 23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. Seed

  29. 24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. 25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath. 26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; 27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. Seed

  30. 28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. 29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come. 30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth: Seed

  31. 32 But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it. 33 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. 34 But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples. 35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. Seed

  32. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. Seed

  33. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Matthew 13:8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, somesixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Matthew 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Seed

  34. Seed or offering giving is the ONLY WAY that the 30/60/100 fold harvest is received. • Seed starts at 11% because the first 10% (the tithe) already belongs to the Lord. • The Seed is the surest way to stop poverty in your life. Seed

  35. The Seed is the quickest way for total debt cancellation. • You can become debt free • You can become an investor • The Seed must be put into fertile soilfor it to accomplish the impossible in life Seed

  36. If you take the tithe or you take the first fruit or you take the seed and you make it alms (because you are moved by compassion) you change the rate of exchange or purpose. • If you give because you are moved by compassion and/or sympathy, then you are giving alms • To get your reward, be obedient and give your tithe first, be full of gratitude and give your First Fruit, and give your Seed in faith believing on a regular basis in fertile ground AND give your alms in secret to the poor. Overview/Life Application

  37. Don’t mix up those four times of giving! If you do, you will miss your blessing. • Most giving is alms. • A delay is not a denial • When the LORD speaks to you, OBEY • He will speak to you about where to sow seed • When you get blessed, BE a blessing (First Fruit) • ASK THE LORD TO TEACH YOU HOW TO GIVE ALL FOUR TYPES OF GIVING AS HE DIRECTS YOU ON A REGULAR BASIS.
