INTRODUCTION • Islamic Educational System has been practiced-before century. • This can be proved by surah Al-Alaq ayah 1-5. • Discuss - Main Characteristics - The Challenge - The Vision - The Effectiveness - Conclusion
1) Acquisition of Knowledge - Basic Islamic teaching is compulsory for every man and woman. 2) Imparting of Knowledge - Essential for Muslims to impart to other people knowledge which they have acquired. 3) Moral Values - We need to learn to improve ourselves [knowledge] Main Characteristics
4) The pleasure of Allah and the public good - knowledge is not for the monetary gain but only for Allah’s pleasure. • 5) The quest for knowledge becomes widespread - Libraries, reading room, educational debates etc. • 6) Education according to the suitability of the pupil - Learn by willingness not by constraining @ threatening.
7) Development of personality - Students have different kind of talents and skills. • 8) Emphasis of action and responsibilities - Knowledge that we gain must be practiced in daily life.
THE CHALLENGE • The pervasive influence of secular materialism will infect the :- - religious-minded individuals and communities - moral & spiritual
The Vision • The goal of Islamic education is not to fill our children’s minds with information about Islam, but rather to teach them about being Muslims. • Focus on :- - teaching values and emphasizes issues of identity and self-esteem - address the real concern of students - achieve involvement of parents.
Basic factors for effective teaching and learning • Meaningful • students should feel that the content of their curriculum is worth learning. Because of this, students are intrinsically motivated to learn.
integrated • encompass and engage the whole child, spiritually, emotionally, socially, intellectually and physically. • Should be integrative across time and place as well as integrative across the curriculum.
- value-based • Teachers must therefore develop a better awareness of their own values and how those values influence their as role models and what student ultimately learn from these experiences about themselves, about others and about Islam.
-challenging • Student must be challenged to thoughtfully examine the topics they are studying, to participate assertively in group discussion, to work productively in cooperative learning activities, and to come to grip with controversial issues.
- active • Should demand a great from both the teacher and students. • Active teacher- making plans, choices and curriculum adjustments as needed. • Prepared to continuously update his/her knowledge base, adjust goals and content to student’s need, take advantage of unfolding events and teachable moments, and to develop eg. That can relate direct-students.
Effectiveness of Islamic approaches in education • a) Develop faith in the One Supreme Creator of all. • b) Acquires the kind of knowledge and understanding which enable him to think and develop a spirit of inquiry in order to discover the laws of the Supreme Creator operating in the universe • c) Motivated to use his knowledge, skills, and understanding to improve himself in society.
Conclusions • Teaching is one of the most creative professions of mankind. The modern Muslim teacher should take up the responsibility of fostering growth and creativity through the creation of Islamic minds and characters.
