  2. Emory CPCRN Overall Aims • Maintain and strengthen the Emory CPCRN infrastructure to support and sustain cancer prevention and control research and practice at Emory and in rural communities across Georgia • Cultivate and strengthen partnerships to promote community-based participatory approaches to preventing cancer and reducing health disparities

  3. Emory CPCRN Overall Aims 3. Translate evidence-based approaches (EBAs) into cancer prevention and control practice through: • National training and online learning circles on EBAs through cross-center collaboration; • Statewide trainings on EBAs conducted with GA regional cancer coalitions; and • A mini-grants program to disseminate EBAs in our partner community of rural Southwest Georgia

  4. Emory CPCRN Overall Aims 4. Address critical gaps in the evidence-base for selected cancer prevention and control interventions through: • Collaborative research with other CPCRN centers on jointly identified priorities; • Evaluation of “promising practices” in rural Southwest Georgia; and • Collaborative pilot studies that facilitate additional translation and intervention research

  5. Site-Specific Training/Dissemination Activities Mini-grants Program: -two cycles of two-year grants (8 grantees total) -CBOs adapt and implement an EBI -evaluation focuses on fidelity/adaptation Regional Trainings -six regional trainings on finding and using EBI (Years 1 & 2) -six regional trainings on health literacy (Years 3 & 4) -conduct in collaboration with regional cancer coalitions

  6. Site-Specific Research Activities Practice-Based Evidence Identify, evaluate and publish 2-4 outcome evaluations of innovative “promising” cancer prevention programs in SW GA Case Studies of Community Health Centers (CHC) Conduct case studies on how organizational context influences the implementation and maintenance of cancer screening interventions in 4 rural CHC clinics Smoke-Free Homes Intervention Pilot Study Pilot a community-based intervention to reduce secondhand smoke exposure in the home environment

  7. Proposed Cross-Center Project:EBA Training Consortium Aims • Further develop existing training content, case studies, tools and other training products • Pursue national training opportunities, increasing recognition of the CPCRN’s translation expertise • Conduct online learning circles as ongoing technical assistance (TA) for training participants and partners • Evaluate training and learning circle methods • Expand CPCRN translation expertise through collective training, TA and practice experiences

  8. Designing Prevention Programs That Work

  9. History of Trainings

  10. Training Description • 2 trainings per year (> 60 participants/year) • Consortium collaborates in the planning, content development and/or delivery of the training sessions • Training goals: • Assist cancer control and health planners in adapting and implementing evidence-based program, • Apply the CDC’s approach to adapting specific interventions to organizational and community context, and • Provide ongoing technical assistance throughout the adoption/adaptation process through learning circles

  11. Evaluation – National Trainings • Process evaluation tracking: • # of trainings and trainees, description of trainees, # CPCRN centers involved, reactions to the training • Outcome evaluation: • pre- and post-training EBA-related skills • 6 month follow-up: EBA use, maintenance of the competencies, adaptation of the EBA into their practice settings

  12. Online Learning Circles • Purpose: Provide ongoing TA that may support deeper learning or lead to action steps and plans to use and adapt EBAs in the participants’ communities • Training participants will be invited to participate in an online learning circle for translation of EBAs for up to a year (~6-12 participants) • Discuss and share current work with EBAs for interactive discussion • Participate in instructional learning activities

  13. Evaluation – Learning Circles • Process evaluation: # & proportion of trainees who participate in the online learning circles, level of participation, and satisfaction and reactions • Select at least 1 organization from each learning circle per year (10 across the 5 years), to develop descriptive narratives about: • The experience with the transfer of the training and learning circle skills on use of EBAs within their organization • The extent to which they implemented an EBA to program planning • How they selected a specific EBA, considered adaptation, planned for adaptation, and implemented the program

  14. Cross-Center Collaboration • EBA Training Consortium: • membership from all interested CPCRN centers • collaborate on training proposals, content development, TA efforts/learning circles, evaluation, manuscripts and grant proposals • Cross-Center National Training: include representatives from Emory and at least two members other from CPCRN centers • Learning Circles: CPCRN members will be invited to participate especially those with specific expertise in topics that arise.

  15. Sites for Potential Presentation Proposals • SOPHE/PRC (submitted with UNC & Harvard) • Society for Prevention Research (due Oct. 26) • NIH Dissemination Conference (due Nov. 6) • CDC Cancer Conference • CDC Chronic Disease Conference • American Public Health Association (APHA) • Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) • Directors of Health Promotion & Education • National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO)

  16. Training repository: curriculum, slides, case studies, decision-making tools, resource lists • National presentations and workshops national visibility of CPCRN in translation expertise • Manuscripts: evaluation findings with participating CPCRN members as co-authors • Submission of training and translation grant proposals based on evaluation findings and training content
