  1. Welcome Back

  2. First, I hope you enjoyed your spring break • Second, I need to see your homework.

  3. Annoucements • You should have All the Pretty Horses by now • You need to read pages 1-50 by next Monday • Vocabulary lists will start again • In the next few weeks, you will have two tests: one a AP style multiple choice test, and an AP style essay test. • Blog due April 1st. It will hopefully be up by the end of the day if I can ever log-in to the wiki page.

  4. To Infinity and Beyond • For the remainder of the year we will be working on preparing you for your future English endeavors, primarily next year’s AP class. • Writing mechanics and formation of a perfect paragraph • Re-familiarize yourself with the number of phrases we studied at the beginning of the year. – Garden of Phrases • Ability to navigate through MC tests.

  5. Today we will be working with Parataxis in the form of both Polysyndeton and Asyndeton • You first assignment is to write half a page about this class, any other class, or a typical school day. • You may not use a period or comma. Everywhere there should be one of these marks of punctuations, you will insert the word “and” or other coordinating conjunction and continue writing • Do not provide thoughts or feelings. Simply events. • For the writing to be Paratactic, it must sound like a list of things or events.

  6. Remember • Even though we are writing one long sentence, it does not mean your writing should be bland. • Use imagery, metaphor, and similes when possible

  7. Example of Polysyndeton • The teacher opened the lecture with promises of a new era and the eyes softly shut their eyes and the teacher talked of grammar and metaphor and the students breathed heavily like meditating monks conjuring heavenly worlds in their minds and shoulders slowly relaxed and the heater turned off and the student drew on her paper scratching distractions into the white void and the teacher sighed and the teacher talked.

  8. Asyndeton • Next is the same exercise but you cannot use a coordinating conjunction or semicolon • Simply list one new idea at a time.

  9. The teacher called on the student. The student responded. The teacher clarified the student’s response for the class, adding larger words to an already confused response. The class stared at the teacher. Someone dropped a pen. The pen clicked twice on the floor. No one picked it up.
