  6. 1880 saw the introduction of rickshaws in India. For the first time they appeared in Shimla. 20 years after that they emerged in Calcutta for transportation of goods. Then it turns into an alternative use of passenger transportations. Initially, rickshaws were used by the Englishmen and it was often used as a private mode of transportation and mainly it was hand pulled rickshaw. After that the cycle rickshaw was built in the 1880s and was first used with regularity starting in 1929 in Singapore. Both motorized & pedal-power cycle rickshaws were used for short distance passenger travel. Days changed with the newly invented auto rickshaw, a sputtering motorized three-wheeler that's less than half the cost of a regular taxi, is the backbone of urban transit for millions of Indians.
