  1. Opinion polling to assess perceptions of coal energy Research to understand public perceptions about coal energy Final Findings by AZ Research, Bangalore October, 2014

  2. IntroductionDetailed FindingsConclusionsAnnexures INTRODUCTION • Research Objective • Research Designand Sample Size

  3. Research Objective Key objective of this study was to conduct opinion polling to understand the perception and attitude amongst Indian population towards electricity generated from coal • In this context, the study covered the following areas • Perception of Indian population towards coal generated electricity vs renewable sources of electricity i.e. solar and wind • Whether large scale development of coal power is reducing energy poverty • The understanding of Indians with respect to health and environmental hazards caused by electricity generated from coal • Whether Indians were in favour of importing coal for electricity generation at a higher price and also after looking at environmental hazard it poses Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  4. Research Design and Sample size * Calls with respondents who could not comprehend the issues or expressed inability to respond, were terminated Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  5. IntroductionDetailed FindingsConclusionsAnnexures Detailed Findings Single Phase UPS for Non-IT Usage - Detailed Findings

  6. Preference of Coal Vs. Renewable Energy Q. Please tell me do you believe that India’s long term energy / power needs are best served by building more coal power plants or by investing in renewable energy options such as solar and wind? All fig in % Base=1000 • Majority of the respondents preferred renewable sources of energy – more so amongst SEC A • More than 70% , SEC A respondents prefer the use of renewable energy, while only 63% of lower segments respondents prefer renewable energy Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  7. New Coal Power Stations’ impact on energy poverty Q. India has built thousands of megawatts of new coal plants in the last 10 years. Do you believe that the new coal power stations are reducing energy poverty, or do you believe that those without access to electricity have continued to be left behind? All fig in % Base=1000 • Most respondents feel that those without access to electricity have been left behind • While almost 2/3rd of SEC A respondents feel that those without access to electricity have been left behind, more than half of lower segments feel new coal stations have reduced energy poverty Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  8. Environmental & health costs of generating power Introduction to question  The construction of coal-fired power plants often result in land acquisition, displacement, air and water pollution and an increase in pollution-related diseases. Q. Do you feel that these health and environmental costs are justifiable in order to deliver more electricity, given there are other renewable energy alternatives available for generating power? All fig in % Base=1000 • At an overall level, majority of the respondents (~58%) feel that the costs of producing electricity with coal energy is not justifiable • More than 60% , SEC A respondents feel the environmental and health costs are NOT justified, while only 53% of lower segments feel the costs are not justified – higher environmental consciousness seen amongst higher SEC Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  9. Awareness of GVK and Adani Q. Are you aware of GVK/Adani? All fig in % Base=1000 GVK Adani • At an overall level, more than half of the respondents were aware of GVK/Adani • The awareness of GVK and Adani is lesser in lower SEC segments Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  10. Reaction to Importing coal from Australia Introduction to question  GVK and Adani are Indian industrialists who are attempting to build new coal mines in Australia. They plan to import at least some of this coal to India and use it to generate electricity. A study has found that the cost of electricity using this imported coal would be twice as much as the national average, and would also be more expensive than renewable energy from solar and wind. Q. Are you in favour of importing coal from the proposed GVK and Adani mines in Australia? All fig in % Base=1000 • At an overall level, majority of the respondents were against importing coal from GVK/Adani mines in Australia – no clear SEC trends emerged on this Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  11. All fig in % Base=1000 • At the state level, highest resistance was seen in Maharashtraand Gujarat • However, least resistance was seen in Delhi Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  12. Barriers to Importing coal from Australia Introduction to question  GVK and Adani are Indian industrialists who are attempting to build new coal mines in Australia. They plan to import at least some of this coal to India and use it to generate electricity. A study has found that the cost of electricity using this imported coal would be twice as much as the national average, and would also be more expensive than renewable energy from solar and wind. IF NO IN PREVIOUS QUESTION  Q. Are you opposed to the GVK and Adani coal import plans because of environmental reasons or economic reasons? All fig in % Base=687 • Amongst those against importing coal from Australia, barriers were more due to economic reasons than environmental Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  13. IntroductionDetailed FindingsConclusionsAnnexures Conclusion

  14. Conclusions • Majority of the respondents were in favor of using renewable sources of energy instead of coal • Most respondents feel that those without access to electricity have been left behind – this is lower amongst lower SEC segments • Majority of the respondents feel that the costs of producing electricity with coal energy is not justifiable – higher environmental consciousness seen amongst higher SEC • Most of the respondents – more than 2/3rd respondents - were against importing Coal from GVK/Adani mines in Australia • Most are against import due to economic reasons followed by environmental reasons  64% were concerned about environmental impact while,70% were concerned about economic reasons Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  15. IntroductionDetailed FindingsConclusionsAnnexures Annexures • Profiling Information • SEC Grid

  16. Profiling the target audience Age and gender of respondent All fig in % Base=1000 • Most of the respondents (more than half) interviewed were between 26 to 35 years • Average age of the respondents was 31 years • More of the respondents were males Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  17. Profiling the target audience Education of the Chief Wage Earner All fig in % Base=1000 58% • Most of the respondents were graduates / post-graduates Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  18. Profiling the target audience Occupation of the Chief Wage Earner All fig in % Base=1000 50% • Most of the respondents interviewed were Self employed and Businessmen Opinion polling in India about coal energy

  19. Profiling the target audience Socio Economic Classification of the Household All fig in % Base=1000 • Most of the respondents interviewed belong to SEC A and B Opinion polling in India about coal energy
