Rediscovering the Charm of Existing Commercial Buildings

This guide, developed by the N.C. Department of Commerce's Division of Community Assistance with support from the Appalachian Regional Commission, focuses on revitalizing existing commercial buildings. It emphasizes the removal of false facades and aluminum awnings, the use of historically appropriate paint schemes, reopening bricked-up windows and doors, and optimal parking placement. The initiative promotes outdoor pedestrian seating and landscaping, while adhering to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation to ensure authenticity and aesthetic integrity.
