Use a Clean Install if… • The computer does not have an operating system already installed • The computer’s current operating system is not upgradeable to Windows Vista • The computer is upgradeable to Windows Vista, but the existing files and software are going to be reloaded. Clean installations typically cause less problems than the other types of installations Chapter 2

  9. Use and Upgrade if… • You want to preserve applications, data and user settings • Current software is compatible with Vista • Current hardware is compatible with Vista Chapter 2

  10. Use a Multi-boot if… • Plan to use more than 1 operating system on the same machine or drive • Testing new operating system while maintaining old operating system • Software is incompatible with new operating system, but you want the features of the new operating system Chapter 2

  11. Performing a Clean Installation • Boot from the Vista Installation DVD to start the installation. • If you have an operating system, insert DVD and run the installation. • Run installation from a distribution server. • Use an image to put a copy of Vista on a computer (ie. Ghost) Chapter 2

Installing Third-Party Drivers • If, during a Windows Vista installation, no disk partitions or unallocated space appear on the Where Do You Want To Install Windows? page, you must install the appropriate driver for your disk controller using the following procedure before the installation can continue Chapter 2

  14. Identifying Upgrade Paths • Only computers running the following operating systems are eligible for upgrades to Windows Vista • Windows 2000 • Windows XP • Windows Vista (another edition) Chapter 2

  17. Upgrading Windows XP to Windows Vista • Insert the Windows Vista installation disk into the DVD drive of the XP computer and run the installation by clicking Install Now. • Make sure you Upgrade instead of doing a new installation. Chapter 2

  18. Upgrading the Vista Edition • Click Start > Control Panel. • Click System Maintenance > Windows Anytime Upgrade. Chapter 2

  19. Upgrading the Vista Edition (cont.) • Click Upgrade To Windows Vista Ultimate. • Click the Begin Upgrade Process button, and follow the instructions to purchase and install the upgrade. Chapter 2

  20. Performing a Dual Boot Installation • To perform this installation, you must have • Two disk partitions • Two full product licenses • A full system backup Chapter 2

  21. Installing Windows Vista in a Dual Boot Environment • Insert the Windows Vista installation disk into the DVD drive and start the installation. • Select a NEW partition to install Vista onto. • Complete the installation process as if you were performing a clean installation. Chapter 2

Post-Installation Tasks • download the updates from Microsoft web site • use Automatic Update to get notified when new updates are available • use Add or Remove Programs from control panel to add optional Windows components • e.g. IIS (Internet Information Services) to run a Web server • Create an account for each user on the computer Chapter 2

  23. You Learned • Windows Vista includes a new preinstallation environment called Windows PE. • In a clean installation, you boot from the Windows Vista setup disk and create or select a blank partition where Vista will reside. Chapter 2

You Learned (cont.) • It is possible to migrate files and settings from an existing Windows installation to a newly installed Windows Vista installation using either Windows Easy Transfer or the User State Migration Tool. • Windows Vista supports in-place upgrades only from Windows XP or another Windows Vista edition.   25. You Learned (cont.) • To perform an in-place upgrade, you must launch the Windows Vista setup program from within Windows XP. • To upgrade from one Windows Vista edition to another, you can use the Windows Anytime Upgrade tool found in the Windows Vista Control Panel. Chapter 2

  26. You Learned (cont.) • A dual boot installation is one in which two operating systems are installed on separate disk partitions, providing access to both at boot time. Chapter 2
