  2. Life Time • Dewitt was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, on February 12, 1787. • He moved to Missouri at age 1. • Green Dewitt died on May 18, 1835.

  3. empresario • Dewitt became an empresario in 1822. • He founded the Dewitt Colony with 166 families in present day Goliad. • His attempt to form a colony failed the first time, but on his second try, he succeeded.

  4. events • In 1808 he married Sara Seely. • He fought in the War of 1812. • He was a skilled fighter and earned the rank of Captain in the army. • After the war, he became Sheriff in his home town in Missouri.

  5. education • Dewitts’ parent highly enforced his learning habits. • As a child, he learned beyond the regular classes. • At age 17, he was already past highschool and into college.

  6. Fun facts • The currency used in Dewitt’s colony was different then the normal money. • His currency is one of the earliest examples of paper money. • His cause of death is unknown, and he was buried in an unmarked grave.
