On April 1, 2001, a significant military incident occurred in the South China Sea when a U.S. Navy EP-3 reconnaissance plane collided with a People's Liberation Army F-8 fighter jet. The accident forced the EP-3 to make an emergency landing at Lingshui Airfield on Hainan Island, where 24 American crew members were detained for 11 days by Chinese authorities. The incident sparked tensions between Washington and Beijing over responsibility and diplomatic protocols. After intense negotiations, the crew was released, but the aircraft was dissected by China for technology research before being returned to the U.S. for repairs.
