  2. Managing Innovation • The challenge of managing projects involving large scale, innovative technology has a long history. One particularly illustrative case dates back well over 300 years to the reign of King Gustavus II Adolphus of Sweden and the building of the Vasa -- 'The Tender Ship

Some Vasa Facts • The price of the Vasa equaled 5% of Sweden's GNP. • There were over 700 sculptures on the Vasa, plus over 200 carved borders, ledges, door frames, window frames, and so on. • The Vasa had a total of about 1000 carved parts which all were placed there from the beginning almost only to please the eye. • The lion on the bow was 3.80 meters long and weighed over 450 kilos. • The hull was kept together by about 6000 iron bolts, 20 000 dymlings (wooden bolts) plus an unknown number of nails.
