Students will be familiar with the forms and transformations of energy. • d. Describe how heat can be transferred through matter by the collisions of atoms (conduction) or through space (radiation). In a liquid or gas, currents will facilitate the transfer of heat (convection). • Lesson Objective: Students will review the materials covering energy, energy transformation, and heat transfer because it is important to review material before a test.

  5. Test Review Cards • You have 15 minutes to work individually to create test review cards. • Using pages 242-253 make test review cards for the upcoming test on tomorrow. • Must have the vocabulary word, a description, a fact, a detail, and an example.

  11. Heat energy Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of the particles that make up a substance A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement. What is Thermal Energy?

  12. Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck. What is Chemical Energy?

  15. What is Sound Energy? • Sound energy is caused by an object’s vibrations.

  16. What is Light Energy? • Light energy is produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles. Like sound vibrations, light vibrations cause energy to be transmitted.

  18. Energy Transformations • Most forms of energy can be transformed into other forms. • A change from one form of energy to another is called an energy transformation. • Some energy changes involve single transformations, while others involve many transformations.

  19. Common Energy Transformations:Every day, energy transformations are all around you. Some of these transformations happen inside you!

  20. Heat • Heat is the energy transferred between objects that are at different temperatures. • Energy is always transferred from the object that has the higher temperature to the one with the lower temperature.

  21. Heat and Thermal Energy • Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of the particles that make up a substance • The more particles there are in a substance at a given, temperature, the greater the thermal energy of the substance.

  22. Reaching the Same Temperature • Energy will always pass from the warmer object to the cooler object until both have the same temperature.

  23. Comparison of Thermal Energy If both glasses of milk are at the same temperature, the full glass will have more thermal energy because it has more potential energy.

  24. Heat Transfer • The transfer of thermal energy from one object to another when they are at different temperatures. • There are three ways to transfer thermal energy; conduction, convection, and radiation

  25. Conduction • When the particles of a material collide with neighboring particles. • Heat is transferred by direct contact.

  26. Convection • The transfer of thermal energy by the movement of particles from one part of a material to another. • Heat transfer through a fluid (liquid or gas)

  27. EX. Convection Current • This circular motion of liquids or gases due to density differences that result from temperature differences is called a convection current.

  28. Radiation • Energy transferred by electromagnetic waves. • Transfer of energy through empty space, liquids, gases, or solids.

  29. EX. Radiation and the Greenhouse Effect • Earth’s atmosphere acts like the windows of a greenhouse allowing the sun’s light to pass through but also trapping the heat energy. • Greenhouse gasses like water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane are the atmospheric gases that trap the heat.
