  2. LINE Line draws the eye in the direction it is going FOUR TYPES OF LINE: A. Vertical: up & down, appears taller and thinner

  3. LINE TYPES B. Horizontal: side to side (horizon) appears widerand shorter

  4. LINE TYPES C. Diagonal : adds movement and excitement effect given depends on how vertical or horizontal the line is

  5. LINE TYPES D. Curved : gives a feeling of movement

  6. LINE TYPES E. Wide lines: give a feeling of width to the body

  7. LINE TYPES F. Narrow lines: give a feeling of thinness

  8. LINE TYPES Lines can be: Structural : lines created by the garment’s construction like seams, buttons, waistlines

  9. LINE TYPES Lines can be: Decorative: added to a garment like lace, trim, pockets and print of fabric

  10. TEXTURE Refers to the feel or “hand” of a fabric Shiny textures increase size while dull textures tend to minimize

  11. Heavy, rough textures increase the size by adding bulk • Stiff fabrics hide outline but add size • Soft, clinging fabrics reveal body shape

  12. PATTERNS Stripes, plaids, florals, etc. Small patterns decrease size while larger patterns increase size

  13. SHAPE (Clothing) The outline that forms when one or more lines come together Also called silhouette FOUR BASIC SHAPES: A. Natural – follows body outline, emphasizes natural waist, most classic

  14. B. Tubular – vertical rectangular shape doesn’t indicate waist t-shirt dress, straight leg pants, tailored business suit C. Bell – Silhouette is bell-shaped A-line skirt, flared pants Shortens body and adds width at bottom of bell

  15. D. Full – gathered skirts, full skirts, wide-leg pants, makes body look larger

  16. BODY SHAPES Refers to the outline of the body Hourglass (8) the shoulder and hip areas are about the same size (within 2-3 inches) the waist is 10-12 inches smaller than the shoulder and hip measurement

  17. BODY SHAPES Triangle (A) Hip measurement is 2 inches or more wider than the shoulders

  18. BODY SHAPES Inverted Triangle (V)Shoulders are 2 or more inches wider than the hips

  19. BODY SHAPES Rectangle (H) Shoulder, waist and hip are 1-2 inches within each other

  20. BODY SHAPES Oval or O-Shape the waist measurement is larger than the shoulder and the hip
