  2. Country Facts & Statistics • Population: 29 million • Literacy Rate: 68% as compared to 99% in America • Language: English and Kiswahili • Currency: Tanzania Shilling. (Exchange rate:1512 TSH to 1 dollar)

  3. Facts cont. • Largest Mountain in Africa: Mt. Kilimanjaro • Its Famous for its national parks including: Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti • Also famous for a tribe called the Maasai who are herding people.

  4. Effects of AIDS • In 1999 51% of females and 35.7% were infected with HIV/AIDS. • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome • Many don’t exhibit symptoms • Can kill a person in less than ten years.

  5. Effects of Malaria • Caused by the bacterium Plasmodium falciparum. • Humans get malaria from being bitten by a mosquito carrying the bacteria. • Symptoms include fever and flu-like sickness, may cause anemia and jaundice. If not treated can cause kidney failure, seizures, coma and death. • Treatment causes only $3 but farmers can not afford this.

  6. Water Situation • Water used is highly contaminated. • Only 52% have access to an “improved” water source which includes protected wells, springs, and pipes. • Most water is dangerously contaminated and contains millions of bacteria.

  7. Lack of Education • The major problem in Tanzania. • This is the root cause of all the problems there. • Only 50% of the population attends primary school. • Only 4% of the population attends secondary school. • Majority of population is subsistence farmers.
