Trade / Technical Schools • Numerous private schools exist, and most are quite good. Some, however, are better at advertising than they are at teaching. You must carefully evaluate to obtain the best training. Check their accreditation. • www.rwm.org • www.cpec.ca/gov • Guest speakers from will be on campus through out the year. Listen for upcoming announcements.
Military • The U.S. Military offers many training programs which prepare young men and women for civilian jobs. This may be a good choice for a student and a way to put aside money for college at a later date. • Military recruiters are readily available on our campus. If you are interested, stop by the counseling office.
Community Colleges • An excellent value in education / quality education at a low price • Earn an Associate Degree or transfer to a four year college • Learn job skills and receive necessary training to enter a certain job market • Assessment Test
California State University • CSU Mentor • A-G coursework • College Entrance Exams • 2011-2012 (Fall/Spring grades matter) • General Selectivity (overall student) • Statistical Data (eligibility index)
University of California • UC Pathways • ELC • A-G Coursework • College Entrance Exams • Personal Statement • 2011-2012 (Fall/Spring grades matter) • General Selectivity • Statistical Data
Rule of Thumb • For most colleges the eligibility index is used to determine whether or not you may apply to a certain college or university. • A rule of thumb is that the higher your GPA the lower your SAT / ACT can be. • Or…the lower your GPA the higher your SAT / ACT must be.
CSU/UC Academic Requirements • History/ Social Science (2) • English (4) • Math (3) • Lab Science (2) • Foreign Language (2) • Visual Performing Arts (1) • College Preparatory Elective (1) More than the required coursework is recommended!!!!!
College Entrance Exams • Community Colleges -Placement Test • CSU -SAT Reasoning and/or ACT (no Writing) • UC -SAT Reasoning and/or ACT (Writing) • Independent Colleges and Universities -Testing is varied -Subject Tests (CollegeBoard) -What’s the impact on Early Decision/ Action?
What the ACT measures • English • Mathematics • Reading • Science • Writing (optional) - required for the UC’s • These scores are added together to give you a composite score
SAT Reasoning Test The SAT Reasoning Test consists of: • Critical reading, which has sentence completion and passage-based questions • Math, which is based on the math that college-bound students typically learn during their first three years of high school • Writing, which has multiple-choice questions and a written essay
SAT Subject Tests • Tests available in: Literature, U.S. History, World History, Mathematics Level 1 & 2, Biology (ecological and molecular), Chemistry, Physics • Reading in: French, German, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Spanish • Reading and Listening in: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish
Which Test Should I Take? • If your strengths are in Math, English and Writing – Then you may score better in the SAT Reasoning Test • If you are more ‘rounded’ and also good in reading and science, then you may score better on the ACT plus writing • If you’re totally unsure – Take Both
You must also determine which test is required by the college / university you are applying to. • Certain college / universities require either/or the SAT Reasoning or ACT + Writing in addition to the two SAT Subject Tests. • A rule of thumb is to NEVER assume anything. Ask your counselor if you have ANY questions.
U.C.’s • In order to be accepted into a University of California, you MUST take either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT plus Writing • SAT Subject Tests are voluntary starting with Class of 2012 • All Tests MUST be completed before December • Make sure your scores are sent / you get 4 free score reports to colleges
You may START your online application on October 1. • For UC’s, your application MUST be submitted between November 1 and November 30. An application submitted after November 30 will not be considered. • Applications should be sent electronically. • If you use the U.S. Postal Service , it is recommended to have a delivery confirmation or a return receipt. Do Not send it special delivery / just normal mail.
UC Personal Statement Prompts • Respond to both prompts using a maximum of 1000 words total • Allocate the word count as you wish. If you choose to respond to one prompt at greater length, it is suggested your shorter answer be no less than 250 words • Stay within the word limit as closely as you can.
UC Prompts • PROMPT 1 • Describe the world you come from (for example, your family, community, or school) and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. • PROMPT 2 • Tell us about personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution, or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relates to the person you are?
Independent Colleges/Universities • A-G Coursework • Early Decision/Action (What does that mean?) • Non-Standardized Applications • Personal Statement • Short Answer Responses • Letters of Recommendation • Resume • Common Applications
Alternate Paths This is the time of the year when some applicants are disappointed they did not receive an offer of admission to the school of their choice.
Options • Accept an offer to another college or university- each student’s campus experience is, to a large extend, what he/she chooses to make of it. • Take the transfer route – attending community college is an outstanding way to get general education classes taken care of, and by meeting the provisions of the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program, and admission to UC/CSU is an option.
MIT Statement “… it might surprise you to know that we aren’t necessarily looking for a perfect SAT scores or prototypical rocket scientists. We don’t want one-dimensional students, just as we don’t believe in a one-dimensional education. In fact, it’s hard for us to describe the perfect MIT applicant other than to say they show a deep passion for what they love and aptitude to make the most of the opportunities they’ve had.”
University of Chicago “… we look for bright students with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and a passion for learning. Show us how you maximized your high school experience and pursued opportunities to develop unique talents. Tell us who you are – in your own voice – not what you think we want to hear.”
Letter of Recommendation • You should have at least two letters on file • One from inside school and one from outside • Addressed to: To Whom It May Concern • Please give the person you asked to write the letter of recommendation at least one week!!!
Letter of Introduction You should start writing a letter of introduction about yourself … your future … and how this scholarship will assist you. This should be on a USB that way you can personalize your letter, i.e. Manteca Rotary, Lions, Elks. Use just the one for many scholarships.
CSU’s • Every CSU has scholarships. • Go to www.csumentor.edu and find the school’s website then find the financial aid portion. • Even if you’re not sure what school you’ll be attending, file for scholarships anyway. • The worst thing that can happen is you can refuse the scholarship.
Miscellaneous Items • Fee Waivers • See counselor for SAT/ACT and college application (for qualified seniors) • NCAA Clearinghouse www.ncaaclearinghouse.org www.ncaa.org • Sticker Shock DO NOT get sticker shock on the price of the university. There is a difference between private and public.
Thank you for attending!!! • Angeleena Sim A – K asim@musd.net • Lori Jackson L – Z ljackson@musd.net • Jo Ann Neilsen Secretary • 858-7270 ext 3
