The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the pre-eminentmen'sprofessional basketball leaguein NorthAmerica, and iswidelyconsidered to be the premier men'sprofessional basketballleaguein the world. It hasthirtyfranchisedmemberclubs (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada), and isanactivemember of USA Basketball(USAB),  whichisrecognized by FIBA (alsoknown as the International Basketball Federation) as the nationalgoverning body for basketball in the United States. The NBA is one of the fourmajor North American professionalsportsleaugues. NBA playersare the world'sbestpaid sportsmen, by averageannualsalary per player.

The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The leagueadoptedthe nameNational Basketball Association on August 3 1949, afterabsorbing the rivalNational Basketball League (NBL). The league'sseveralinternational as well as individual team officesare directed out of itsheadofficeslocated in the  Olympic Tower at 645 FifthAvenue in New York City. NBA Entertainment and NBA TV studiosaredirected out of officeslocated in Secaucus, New Jersey.

Friday 1 • NBA All-Star Weekend Celebrity Game: First held in 2004, the gamefeaturesretired NBA players, WNBA players, actors, musicians, and athletes from sportsotherthan basketball. • Rising Stars Challenge : From 1995 until 1999, the event was called the "Rookie Game," and composedentirely of first-yearplayers. From 2000 through 2011, the game, renamed the "Rookie Challenge", featured a team of first-yearplayers ('Rookies') against a team of second-yearplayers ('Sophomores'). The 2012 gamedebuted a newname, the "Rising Stars Challenge", and a new format.   5. Saturday2 • D-LeagueAll-Star Game: First held in 2007, thisgamefeatures the bestplayers from the NBA Development League(D-League). The First winner was the East by a score of 114-100. The D-LeagueAll-Star game was not held in the same arena as all the otherAll-Star Saturdayactivities. Instead, it was held on NBA Jam Session'spracticecourt. • SlamDunkContest:Thiscompetitionshowcases the creativity and athleticability of some of the league'syoungestbestdunkers. The specificrules of the contestaredecidedeachyear, but the competitionisalwaysjudgedsubjectively. Aftereachdunk, orattempteddunk, competitorsareawarded a mark out of 10 from five judges, giving a possible high score of 50. The usualrules of 'traveling' and doubledribbling do not apply. • Three-Point Shootout: The league'sbestthree point shootersshoot five basketballs from five differentspotsaround the three-point line. Eachshotisworth one point except the lastball of eachrack (informallycalled 'moneyballs'), whichisworthtwopoints. The highestscoreavailable in one roundis 30 points. The shootershave one minute to shoot the basketballs. • Skills Challenge: Makingitsdebut in 2003, the Skills Challenge pitsselectedplayers in a timedobstaclecourse of dribbling, shooting and passing. Agility, quickness and accuracyallcomeintoplay • Shooting Stars Competition: A retired NBA player, a current NBA player and a WNBA playercompetetogether in a shootingcompetition.
