  3. Objectives • Estimate the economic impacts of community hospitals. • Estimate the employment impacts of community hospitals. • Estimate the patient care impacts of community hospitals.

  4. Economic Impact • $2.85 billion – annual direct impact of community hospitals to North Dakota economy • $4.78 billion – annual total economic impact (direct and secondary) For comparison, ND tourism industry has $4.6 billion impact (2010) and ND lignite coal industry has $3 billion impact.

  5. Economic Impact • 77% - percentage of dollars spent by community hospitals that remain in North Dakota.

  6. Employment Impact • 21,500 – number of full-time workers directly employed by ND community hospitals • 36,300 – number of full-time positions generated by ND community hospitals (direct and secondary) • $54,444 – average annual wage for hospital worker according to Job Service ND, 22% higher than state average

  7. Employment Impact • 13.5% - percentage of ND workforce employed in health care and social services sector • Largest non-governmental employer • 1 out of every 7 ND workers employed in health care or social services • Five of the top six largest employers in the state are hospitals/health systems

  8. Utilization Impact • 1 out of every 7 ND residents is admitted to a community hospital annually. • 1 out of every 2 ND residents visits a hospital emergency room annually. • Every ND resident has two outpatient encounters with a community hospital annually.
