  2. Early Life • Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21st, 1685, in Eisenach, Saxe-Eisenach • Sebastian was the youngest child of Johann Ambrosius Bach, the director of the towns musicians, and a member of a large family of German musicians.

  3. Instruments • Bach played a wide variety of instruments, including harpischord, and organ, and surveyed many different musical styles and techniques.

  4. Orchestral Music • Sebastian wrote music for single instruments, duets, and small ensembles. • Bach’s best known orchestral works are the Brandenburg concertos

  5. Style • Bach’s musical style came from his exposure to many different types of music, such as German and French music. • His access to family musicians and instruments developed him to become an extraordinary musician.

  6. Musical Works • Partitas • Prelude and Fugue [“St. Anne”] in E-flat Major • Mass in B Minor • Schübler Chorale Preludes • The Art of the Fugue was the last piece of music he was writing but was unfinished because of his illness

  7. Death • On 28 July 1750 Bach died at the age of 65. • His cause of death was listed as consequences of a very unsuccessful eye operation.
