  1. Science Fair Initial Topic Flow Chart 7th Name_______________________ What is the problem or question being investigated? In other words, what is the purpose for doing this project? (I wanted to find out …) ___________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ • Reformate your question to fit one of these experimental models: • I will compare the effect of A______________________ • _________ on B_______________________________. • OR • I will explore how A____________________________ • effectsB_____________________________________. • OR • I will determine if A_____________________________ • is able to B____________________________________. How would your findings help to explain or demonstrate some process or phenomenon that happens outside the science classroom (that is, in the “real world”). _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Independent Variable: Ais the independent (manipulated) variable. For your project, you will change one factor to see if it affects the outcome of the experiment. Describe your independent variable here: (If you put temperature in blank A, you can’t just say “temperature” here. You must state what you are going to take the temperature of.) ______________________________________ You must design your experiment so that this variable is tested at 3 or more different events/intensities/ settings. At what 3 levels (or intensities or settings) will you test your independent variable? ____________ ____________ __________ Dependent Variable: Bis the dependent (responding) variable. You will take quantitative or qualitative observations to determine if changing the level, intensity or setting of A (your independent variable) changes the outcome of the experiment in any way. Describe your dependent variable here: ____________________________________________ Describe how you will make your observations here. Be specific. For example, if you are going to measure something, state how and what you will measure and what instrument you will use to measure it. If you are going to count something, state specifically what you are going to count. If you are going to take pictures, describe what you will take pictures of & how often. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Constant conditions (controlled factors) In order to be able to compare the results of your experiments, all factors except for the ONE you are testing (the manipulated variable) must remain the same for every trial at every level, intensity or setting. What factors will you control in your experiment? _________________ ___ __________________ ____________________ __________________

  2. Preliminary hypothesis: IF: (Describe your manipulated variable here and how you will change it during the experiment) _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ THEN:Make a prediction about what you think will happen here) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ BECAUSE: (Suggest a scientific basis for the prediction you have made. You will need to do some RESEARCH to refine this part of your hypothesis.) _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Make a list of topics or terms you might look up in a database, book, encyclopedia or search engine to help you better understand your experiment topic and its applications? List at least 6 terms or phrases. 1.___________________________________________ 2.___________________________________________ 3.___________________________________________ 4.___________________________________________ 5.___________________________________________ 6.___________________________________________ Briefly describe the experiment you will do to answer the question.
