The Room for the River programme is a comprehensive initiative aimed at improving flood protection and spatial quality in the river basins of the Netherlands, particularly along the Rhine and Meuse rivers. The programme addresses historical challenges like dike breaches and rising flood risks through strategic measures and collaboration among government ministries, local authorities, and water management agencies. Key objectives include enhancing safety standards, evaluating hydraulic designs regularly, and ensuring that the region's ecological and spatial quality is preserved while effectively managing flood risks.

Flood protection in NL Flood Protection Act: • safety levels (probabilities) • every 5 years, evaluation hydraulic design parameters (design discharges, etc.) • every 5 years: check infrastructure (dikes and dams) • report to Parliament 2001: new round: Rhine design discharge up from 15.000 to 16.000 m3/s at the border
Objectives of Room for Rivers 1. Safety “Improving flood protection in the Rivers Region up to the required level” 2. Spatial quality “Contributing to improving the spatial quality of the Rivers Region”
