  2. Topic Objectives At the end of the topic students should be able to: • Understand and be aware of their own attitude about the language. • Analyse the structure of the English grammar • Understand and use grammar correctly in written and oral communication.

  3. Definition The word “noun” derives from the Latin nomen meaning NAME. Nouns is a word which refers to people, things, ideas, feelings or qualities.

  4. Proper Nouns • Also called proper names. • Also the names of unique entities. • Jamal, Edwin, Malaysia, India, Australia, June, Monday, etc. • Proper nouns are capitalised in English.

  5. Common Nouns • Girl, planet and country are common nouns. • Refers to a person, place, in a general sense. • Only capitalised when you begin the sentence.

  6. Abstract Nouns • A noun that is abstract is an aspect, concept, idea, experience, state of being, trait, quality, feeling or other entity that cannot be experienced with the five senses. • Dedication, peace, honesty…

  7. Nouns Groups • Can be subject, object or complement of a verb or the object of a preposition. • Can be on their own but often include other words such as determiners, numbers and adjectives. • Can be pronouns. • Singular noun groups take singular verbs and plural noun groups take plural verbs.
