  2. Tuesday, April 22 Aim: How do preliminary notes and ideas form an outline and thesis statement in an argumentative essay? Objectives: • To evaluate thesis statements and developing ideas • To create an outline with logic and a coherent structure • To form a thesis statement that reflects your view on the subject in a declarative tone

  3. Annotating a Visual Text • Before we create our thesis statements, lets first get some ideas flowing by annotated the advertisement we chose • Find the features worth further analysis and ask questions/make comments about them • Find the point of tension or conflict in the advertisement– that is often a good place to start when creating a thesis statement

  4. Thesis Statement • Should be in the form of a declarative statement • This is your view/opinion on a subject • It has to be substantiated within the rest of your essay • Constantly refer back to your statement and revise if necessary– you are not locked in to your initial viewpoint. • Addresses the question, proposes a solution, or makes a statement on a controversial topic

  5. A Working Thesis • In an advertisement for the VolkwagenAmarak, the predominant image is a key that promises consumers with adventure, freedom, and individuality while in the safety of the trusted “VW.”

  6. Building on my initial idea • The VolkwagenAmarak advertisement features a predominant image of a car key that symbolizes freedom, individuality, and non-conformity, which exploits the patriotic values of its consumers.

  7. “So What” • After reading a declarative statement, it may dawn on you to ask the question, “So what?” • Incorporate your reason for making this statement in your introductory paragraph, to add credibility to your argument. • Thesis statement checklist

Creating an Outline • Use RFW, pages 20-21 for the format of a formal outline • Working from your annotated text and thesis statement, start creating an outline based on this format • Use a separate index card for each of the “features” of your advertisement. • Reminder: 3 hard copies of your outline due tomorrow
