  6. Dash • An em dash is the width of an m • Use an "em" dash to • explain text within a sentence • emphasize a break or sudden thought in a sentence • connect introductory thoughts to the rest of a sentence • An em dash precedes a quote attribution

Dash • En Dash • An en dash, roughly the width of an n, is a little longer than a hyphen. • Use an "en" dash to • show ranges of numbers such as dates, pages, etc. • replace a hyphen in a compound adjective to connect two compound modifiers that are either open compounds or already hyphenated compounds

  8. Em Dash Examples • Maria's best friend—the woman she brought to the party—grew up in the house next door. • Cole bought a digital camera—or maybe it was an iPod—with his birthday money.

  9. En Dash Examples • The years 2010‒2012. • January‒February • Join us at the Open House July 6–7. Hours: 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

  10. Quick Note • Both the Hyphen and the en dash are used for a range of numbers. Chose one or the other and use it consistently.
