Paragraph Anatomy Paragraphs are made up of three parts: • The TOPIC SENTENCE • The BODY SENTENCES • The CLOSING SENTENCE
Transitions • Part of essay writing is creating a FLOW between paragraphs, so that it seems like the essay is one major train of thought • Essays should always feel unified – each argument should feel like an extension of the previous one • To do this, it is important to include a sentence at either the beginning or the end of a paragraph to link it to the previous (or next) one
TRANSITION EXAMPLES: “A very fleshed-out setting would mean far less if the people inhabiting it did not feel real, however, and so it is to the benefit of both the Harry Potter books and their readers that Rowling has just as much skill for crafting characters as she does for building her world.”“It is not merely the quality of the narrative that makes the original North American edition of Metroid Prime superior to that of its later European release, but the fact that it is actually ties in better to the overarching plot of the series.”
Both of those could have been leading into a new paragraph from the end of a previous one, or from the start of the new one • Both also serve as topic sentences too!
