  3. History of the Villanelle • Origin traced back to Italian harvest songs • Modern origin appears in 1602 • Jean Passerat set standards for form • Became popular in England 1870s • Repetition creates link with audience • Similar to lyrical poetry

The Villanelle at a Glance • Poem of 19 lines • Six Stanzas (grouping of lines), 1st 5 stanzas are 3 lines, last is 4 lines • 1st line of 1st stanza is repeated as last line of 2nd & 4th stanzas • 3rd line of 1st stanzais repeated as last line of 3rd & 5th stanzas • Last 2 refrain lines become last 2 lines of poem • Rhyme Scheme is A-B-A, repeated according to the refrain
