  1. QuicNet Quality initiative for construction and operation of infrastructure networks Dr.-Ing. Peter Haardt Federal Highway Research Institute, Germany 2nd ECTP Plenary Conference New Research and Innovation Strategy for Construction in Europe Versailles, France, November 21st/22nd

  2. QuicNet Quality initiative for construction and operation of infrastructure networks Utility Networks Waterways Railways Roads Boundary conditions Lifecycle Aspects Infrastructure Management Proposed by German Construction Technology Platform (GCTP)

  3. Objectives: • to enhance quality of infrastructure networks in consideration of sustainability and lifecycle aspects • to adopt holistic approaches for road, rail, waterways and supply infrastructure • to consider perspectives of owners, users, construction industry, politics, administration and research

  4. Benefits: advanced infrastructure management ... Benefits: advanced infrastructure management ... ... reduces direct costs Benefits: advanced infrastructure management ... ... reduces direct costs ... saves energy/avoids emissions/reduces the use of natural ressources Benefits: advanced infrastructure management ... ... reduces direct costs ... saves energy/avoids emissions/reduces the use of natural ressources ... reduces disruption and delay costs/improves mobility Benefits: advanced infrastructure management ... ... reduces direct costs ... saves energy/avoids emissions/reduces the use of natural ressources ... reduces disruption and delay costs/improves mobility ... increases competitiveness smarter, greener, more competitive

  5. Challenges: • Challenges: • different boundary conditions in different countries/areas • Challenges: • different boundary conditions in different countries/areas • lack of lifecycle-oriented considerations (Life-Cycle-Analysis) • Challenges: • different boundary conditions in different countries/areas • lack of lifecycle-oriented considerations (Life-Cycle-Analysis) • lack of optimized Infrastructure Management Methods

  6. Solutions: • Solutions: • Boundary Conditions (definition of user-oriented quality, survey of actual and future conditions, ...) • Solutions: • Boundary Conditions (definition of user-oriented quality, survey of actual and future conditions, ...) • Life-Cycle-Aspects (procedures to evaluate aspects of sustainability, new life-cycle-concepts, system-specific customised materials and design, sensor technologies, maintenance methods, ...) • Solutions: • Boundary Conditions (definition of user-oriented quality, survey of actual and future conditions, ...) • Life-Cycle-Aspects (procedures to evaluate aspects of sustainability, new life-cycle-concepts, system-specific customised materials and design, sensor technologies, maintenance methods, ...) • Infrastructure Management (optimized management methods, process suggestions for PPP, data aquisition, transfer, processing, classification of damage, damage tolerances, acceptance criteria, ...)

  7. Boundary Conditions Lifecycle Aspects Infrastructure Management Utility Networks Waterways Railways Roads Umbrella Project

  8. Boundary Conditions Lifecycle Aspects Infrastructure Management Utility Networks Waterways Railways Roads Collaborative Projects

  9. Boundary Conditions Lifecycle Aspects Infrastructure Management Utility Networks Waterways Railways Roads QuicNet - Lifecycle

  10. Example: QuicNet - Lifecycle Evaluation of sustainability aspects(actions, design, construction, characteristics, costs ...) Development of new lifecycle concepts (knowledge based and deterministically oriented) Development of new system-specific materialsand designs (user oriented quality, ...) Development of new sensor technologies, measurement systems, data aquisition, monitoring, ... Development of new methods of preventive maintenance, new minimal-invasive concepts of maintenance Demonstration projects (road, railway, waterway, utilities)

  11. Current partners from Workshop22/23 June 2006 • Austria • Czech Republic • Denmark • France • Germany • Ireland • Italy • Netherlands • Poland • Sweden • Switzerland • United Kingdom

  12. Expectations: • additional interested partners • project proposals • Industry partner as host for QuicNet-Umbrella (currently Bilfinger Berger), coordination group • promotion on political level (Commission, EU-Parlamentarians, national member of Programme Committee)
