  4. Grammar comment 14-2 The Dative case and Impersonal Constructions In Russian, adverbs are used in impersonal constructions such as: Трудно учиться в университете. It's hard to study at the university. Note that there is no subject in this sentence construction. We simply translate the adverb 'трудно' as 'it's hard', supplying the subject 'it'.

  5. Practice Translate: • Интересно заниматься в университете. • Хорошо работать в банке. • Плохо жить в этом районе.

  6. Grammar comment 14-2 Sentences of this type can be “personalized” by putting the person involved (the subject of the infinitive) in the Dative case. Мне трудно учиться в унивеситете. It's hard for me to study at the university.

  7. Practice Give the dative of the pronoun and translate: • (ты) трудно учить испанский? • (мы) легко работать в больнице. • (они) трудно готовить. • (она) интересно изучать математику.

  8. Grammar comment 14-2 Since there is no subject, we can use the past tense neuter form было to put the whole construction in the past tense. Мне трудно было учиться в университете. It was hard for me to study at the university.

  9. Grammar comment 14-2 We can use the future tense form будет to put the whole construction in the future. Мне трудно будет учиться в университете. It will be hard for me to study at the university.

  15. Grammar comment 14-3 Use надо or нужно to express necessity. Надо (нужно) есть фрукты и овощи. It's necessary to eat fruits and vegetables.

  16. 14-3 Sentences of this type can be “personalized” by putting the person involved (the subject of the infinitive) in the Dative case. Мненельзя пить молоко. I'm not supposed to drink milk. Мне можно позвонить тебе завтра? Can I call you tomorrow? Тебенадо пить воду. You need to drink water. Намнужно есть овощи. You need to eat vegetables.
