  1. MGMT002: TECHNOLOGY AND WORLD CHANGE New EquiPmenT for UNderwater Expedition Team members: Chiew Siew Queen Candice Huang Guan Hua Lim Yew Leong Jeremy Ngo Shih Ching Yu Bing Xiong

  2. Introduction • Problem statement • Nitrogen Decompression, Stranding • Safety • Our answer: • NEPTUNE, the New EquiPmenT for UNderwater Experience

  3. Technology Components • Global Positioning System (GPS) • Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus ( Scuba ) • Dive Computer

  4. Technology Components Global Positioning System • Worldwide radio navigation system • Satellites as reference points • Easier to locate lost divers • Continuous Signal transmission

  5. Technology Components Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus ( Scuba ) • Gas Cylinder • Regulator • Pony Tank • Snorkel • Buoyancy Control

  6. Technology Components Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus ( Scuba ) • Gas Cylinder • Nitrox • Impossible to breathe directly • Regulator • Reduce the pressure to safe level • Supply air based on the demand needed • Wash with freshwater to prevent corrosion

  7. Technology Components Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus ( Scuba ) • Pony tank • To provide sufficient air during emergency • Snorkel • Help diver to breathe the outside air and conserve amount of air in the tank

  8. Technology Components Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus ( Scuba ) • Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) • To control the buoyancy • Important as it controls the depth of the diver. • Due to the nature being buoyant, additional weight must be added to counter this nature.

  9. Technology Components • Dive Computer • Provide necessary information • Eject safety float • Ensure the safety of the diver • GPS capability

  10. How the System works (1 of 4) • Step 1: Load personal Secure Digital (SD) card • Loading the personal SD card will activate the system • Step 2: Access past diving records • NEPTUNE will access past diving records saved in the system to assess if the diver has exceed his dive limit for the day

  11. How the System works (2 of 4) • Step 3 : Safety Feature – Calculate residual nitrogen levels in diver’s body • NEPTUNE will calculate nitrogen levels in the diver’s body to ensure that nitrogen levels in his body are safe for diving • Step 4: Depth and air gauges activated • Once NEPTUNE calculates that the diver is safe to carry out a dive, then only the depth and air gauges will be activated

  12. How the System works (3 of 4) • Step 5: Calculation of “Dive Time Left” • NEPTUNE will start counting down the amount of time the diver has left for diving • Step 6:Descent – corresponding calculations • The depth gauge will measure the corresponding depth and update the main computer which will do the calculations once again. The deeper the diver goes, more air is needed to inflate the BCG when he needs to ascend. Simultaneously, the computer will take the depth reading and the amount of time spent at various depths to calculate the nitrogen build-up in the diver’s body, and will also automatically inflate the BCG when needed

  13. How the System works (4 of 4) • Step 7: Safe ascension (manual override) • NEPTUNE will automatically calculate the safe ascension rate for the diver. However, this safety feature can be manually over-ridden in cases of emergency • Step 8: Integrated GPS System • The GPS System in NEPTUNE would be very handy for divers who are not familiar with how to use a compass and would be able to transmit his location to another diver with the same system. • Step 9: Uploading data from secure digital (SD) card to personal computer (PC) or website • The diver would be able to read all the various data about his recent dive and also all his past dives. This SD card would also be able to be linked with a computer with a SD card reader and with an internet connection; the diver can upload his data and records with a global or regional database

  14. Development Process Time Opportunity (need) Identification: Nitrogen Decompression Opportunity (need) Identification: Danger of stranding Opportunity (need) Identification: Personalized Sport and individual records Opportunity (need) Identification: administration purposes and web portal Concept Development: Safety GPS Dive Computer: Calculation of Variables SD card: the proprietary media and startup device Automating the BCD: Combining calculations with hardware capabilities NEPTUNE

  15. Other Potential Applications • Underwater excavation, underwater archaeology. • Mountain Climbing

  16. Technological Substitutes Substitutes, what substitutes?? Well… if you consider these as substitutes.

  17. Technological Substitutes • Abyss explorer • Aladin Dive computer • DecoPlanner • NiTekLogic

  18. Business Plan • Important to help see the development of the product, whether it is economically viable, to allow conceptualizing of potential profit realization • Gives greater credibility for further development of product to business partners

  19. Outsourcing of diving suits • Neptune decided that it would be best to position itself as a product development company • Production of Neptune Diving outsourced To external manufacturers • Possible capital sources include EDB seed funding, venture capitalists etc

  20. Collaboration with Padi and Naui • Padi and Naui are well established safety diving schools (non-profit organizations). • Greater credibility to the end users • Price controlled by Neptune (close cooperation)

  21. Pricing • Affordable range • To encourage greatest diffusion of products • Subject to changes (as it must also not be deemed as a cheap substitute, but a reasonable complement)

  22. Main Selling Point: CBA • The Cost Benefit Analysis: Ultimately, it is the estimated cost savings • Include safety, administrative accounting etc

  23. HELP!!!!

  24. DO NOT FEAR… NEPTUNE IS HERE
