  4. Value Proposition at a glance • Automate the identification and movement of low-activity or inactive files to a hierarchy of lower-cost storage. • Results • Improved Application Availability • Speed file-server recovery times by moving inactive files to a hierarchy of lower-cost storage • Optimized Storage Resource Utilization • Move low-activity or inactive files to a hierarchy of lower-cost storage • Reduce backup times and resource usage by focusing on active files • Enhanced Storage Personnel Productivity • Eliminate manual file system clean-up activities

  5. IBM TSM HSM or Windows • Centralized point of control for HSM on Windows • File system and directory selection • Specially suited for Windows File Servers • Automated management • Policy-based file selection • On-demand scheduling • Transparent recall * All Screenshots are subject of change currently being ‘blue-washed’

  6. Automatic archiving* • Based on rules (policies) • - Include/exclude directories • - Include/exclude file types (extensions) • - Filter files based on creation, modification, or last access date • - Absolute or relative date • - Several different rules possible • - Rules are stored as XML documents • Example • - All documents with extension DOC (Word documents) in directory \\server2\E$\Users\Smith and its subdirectories that have not been accessed for 90 days * Term’archiving’subject of change

  7. Automatic archiving* – cont’d • Archiving modes • - Keep the original file (do not remove) • - Replace the file with a stub – DEFAULT • - Delete the file from the file server • Execution • - Once • - Daily at a predefined time • - Weekly • - Monthly * Term’archiving’subject of change

  8. Example: Files before archiving* • Before archiving • Standard document icons • Logical disk size equal to physical disk size * Term’archiving’subject of change

  9. Example: Stubs after archiving* • After archiving • Modified document icons (with clock) • Fully transparent access from Windows Explorer • Logical disk size unchanged but physical disk size reduced to size • of one disk cluster

  10. Simple click Triggers restore from repository Synchronous operation Transparent retrieval from tape or other storage media (different retrieval times) Easy retrieval from Windows Explorer

  11. Transparent retrieval from applications • “File - Open” in application menu • Browse and select • Triggers automatic restore from repository

  12. What happens to restored files? • If the user modifies the file … • - Additional version is stored in the archive systemExample: Editing a Word document • - Subsequent retrieval restores most recent version • If the user just views it without changing it … • - Automatic archiving re-stubs the restored file • - Remove the file without archiving a second copy and creates a shortcut * Term’archiving’subject of change

  13. Configuring an archive* policy • System administrationtask • Part of System Administration Client • Fast and efficient in a GUI • Step 1 • - Include directories • Step 2 • - Select archiving mode * Term’archiving’subject of change

  14. Configuring an archive* policy – cont’d Step 3 - Include/exclude file types * Term’archiving’subject of change

  15. Configuring an archive* policy – cont’d • Step 4 • Include/exclude files based on date condition • Absolute or relative • Creation, modification or last access date * Term’archiving’subject of change

  16. Search and retrieve (system administrator function) • Search panel (part of System Administration Client) • File name as search parameter (*, ? as wildcards) • Creates a hit list

  17. Search and retrieve – cont’d • Search results as hit list • Restore of previous versions • Restore to different location

  18. Other functions for the system administrator • Ad-hoc archiving* • - Single files or directories - Done through executing once a policy • Space Checker • - Calculates how much disk space can be saved by an archiving job * Term’archiving’subject of change

  19. Architecture Windows File Servers IBM TSM HSM for Windows connector including TSM API Client Search and retrieve Archiving Policies IBM TSM Server Archive Restore Tape system Other storage device User PCs No Client codes

  20. IBM TSM Server Integration • All migrated files are stored in IBM TSM Server • Original file attributes are kept in the repository • IBM TSM HSM for Windows uses the standard TSM Archive API • IBM TSM HSM for Windows acts as TSM client

  21. Minimum Requirements • Machine - Pentium processor • Minimum memory and space requirements • At least 256 MB of memory • 25 MB of available disk space • Any of the following Windows versions that support NTFS V5 • Windows 2000 Professional SP3 and up • Windows 2000 Server SP3 and up • Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP3 and up • Windows 2003 Server • Windows 2003 Enterprise Server (32-bit) • Supported Repository: IBM TSM Server V5.3 (please check RFA for specific level) • Tivoli Storage Manager Windows Client API 5.3 and additional APAR IC46097 are required (included in client level 5.3.0.13 or higher), otherwise ‘reparse points’ are not handled correctly.

  22. Planned Availability Dates • September 6, 2005: Announcement • September 16, 2005: Electronic general availability via Passport Advantage • October 28, 2005: Media general availability via Passport Advantage and AAS

  23. Solution Highlights • Central, rule-based, automatic archiving* • - Comfortable administration • Ease of use • - Simple retrieval through a click in Windows Explorer • - Transparent access in Windows application • Straightforward implementation and administration • - No code install on Client workstation • - Tightly integrated into Windows * Term’archiving’subject of change

  24. Highlights – cont’d • 100 % document fidelity • - Preserves original file attributes • Flexibility • - Several archiving options (with or without shortcuts) • Extensibility • - Solution could be extended to work with IBM DB2 Content Manager • Part of a IBM’s Total Storage Management solution • - Completes IBM’s storage portfolio for HSM on Windows • - IBM TSM Server functions applicable, e.g. Server based HSM • - All IBM TSM Server platforms supported • - Production proven IBM TSM Server repository
