  4. A struggle between one character & another A struggle within a character, perhaps to make difficult decision or to force himself to do a difficult task.

  5. VOCABULARY 1 • Un + employed  prefix without a job • Bum Someone who has no home or job & lives by asking other people for money • Lawn mover • Spring-summer-autumn/fall-winter • Weed Any wild plant which grows in a garden where it prevents the cultivated plants from growing freely. • Feed To give food to a person, group or animal • Gulp(ed) To make a swallowing movement because of fear, surprise

  6. LITERATURE CONFLICT Characters working to solve problems • Who is the narrator, or “I” in this story? Ernie • What conflict is introduced in the first paragraph? Ernie’s trouble with jobs.

  7. COMPREHENSION • How did Ernie mess up each summer job? He mowed tomato plants, got water inside a car he washed, and pulled up flowers when gardening. • Why is Ernie surprised to get this job? Because he has messed up other jobs. .

  8. VOCABULARY 2 • I moaned! (line 30) To make a long low sound of pain. “Let me die!” • He could be in a coma. (line 36) • Over + feed = feed too much (line 46) • Six-shooter = gun that shoots six bullets (line 50) • Bump off = to kill someone (line 50) • Kinfolk = related people (line 51)

  10. THINK IT THROUGH • What problem does Ernie have on his new job? Jaws is dead.

  11. VOCABULARY 3 • I was about to toss him into the garbage. (line57) To throw something carelessly. • The owner glared at me. (line 62) A long angry look.

  12. LITERATURE CONFLICT • The characters can experience inner conflict Problems in their minds caused by questions about their own behavior • What inner conflict Ernie is facing here? His conscience bothers him about replacing Jaws.

  13. COMPREHENSION • Do you think Ernie’s solution is a good one? Yes, he solved the problem by replacing the fish. No, he was dishonest and should have said it died.

  14. VOCABULARY 4 • I watched from my bedroom window as they piled out their car. (line 74) Move • I trudged down the stairs to face the music. (line 77) To walk slowly. To accept punishment for something you have done. • I’ve been dreading to tell the twins that Jaws died. (line 86) Afraid of

  15. COMPREHENSION • What does Mrs. Benson know? The fish in the bowl is not Jaws

  16. THINK IT THROUGH • Why does Mrs. Benson think Ernie did a good job? She knows the fish was dead before she left. • When in the story do you think the conflict begin? When Ernie gets the job (lines 13-16) When Jaws is dead (lines 29-31) • Should Ernie feel guilty about taking extra money? Why or why not? No, he paid to replace the fish with his own money & wasn’t responsible for its death.
