  1. Algebra II 1.1: Apply Properties of Real Numbers Summer Packets: Due Friday. Quiz 1.1-1.4: next week Wednesday, 9/18 Sophomores: NWEA testing: this Friday and finish next Monday

  2. Do Now: Real World Application 1.) You work 10 hours and earn $85. What is your earning rate? 2.) You travel 10 miles at an average speed of 45mph. How many hours does the trip take? 3.) You drive 3 hours at 65 mph. How far did you drive?

  3. Vocabulary • Real numbers consist of rational and irrational numbers. • A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction. An irrational number cannot be written as a fraction.

  4. Vocabulary • Terminating decimals and repeating decimals are rational. Decimals that have no pattern and do not end are irrational. • Two subsets of rational numbers are whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, 4…) and integers (…-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3…).

  5. Inverse Operations • What are inverse operations? Give examples.

  6. Reciprocal • What is a reciprocal? When is it used?

  7. Convert the rate 1.) 350 feet to yards 2.) 7 quarts to gallons note: 4qt = 1 gal

  8. Convert the rate 3.) 20 mi/h to feet per second 4.) 50 km/h to miles per hour note: approx. 1.61 miles = 1 km

  9. Algebra II 1.2: Evaluate and Simplify Algebraic Expressions HW: p.13-15 (3-54 every mult of 3)

  10. What is an expression? • What is a variable? • What is a power? What are the two parts of a power?

  11. What is a coefficient? • Give an example of like terms. • Give an examples of terms that are not like terms.

  12. Evaluate the power. 1.) 5.) 2.) 6.) 3.) 7.) 4.) 8.)

  13. Simplify the expression 1.) -9x – 4x + 5 2.) -15x + 7 – 10 + 20x 3.) 7(x – 3) – 4(x + 5)

  14. Simplify the expression 4.) 5.)

  15. Evaluate the expression for the given value of the variable. 1.) -10x + 15 when x = 2 2.) 5j – 3j(5) when j = 10 3.) when m = 6 4.) when x = -1
