  1. Communication Systems

  2. When you are talking face-to-face you are using communication, but not technology. Communication technology is the transfer of messages (information) among people and/or machines through the use of technology. What is the difference between communication and communication technology? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  3. Like all systems, a communication system includes inputs, processes, outputs, and feedback associated with sending and receiving messages. How does communication fit the systems model? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  4. The people you are designing it for. The medium used. The nature of the message. The language used to express ideas. What factors are important when designing a message? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  5. Communication systems can be grouped by the way they carry messages. Some ways include: Biological communication Graphic communication Wave communication Telecommunication What is one way of grouping communication systems? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  6. As our world grows more complex, people need new modes of communication to interact with technology. Why are new modes of communication necessary? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  7. Over time people have developed from biological communication to the printed word, and today communication is often based on electrical signals. What progress have people made in their ability to communicate with each other? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  8. Setting a electric timer to turn on a lamp. A computer programmer typing a program into a computer. Using a controller while playing a computer game. How can a person communicate with a machine? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  9. A whistling teapot that tells you the water is boiling. An alarm system that tells you someone has entered a protected store or home. A smoke detector that senses a fire and warns you of the danger. How does a machine send a message to a person? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  10. A computer giving instructions to a printer, telling it to print a report. Computers attached to sensors controlling the flow of factory materials and the operation of the machines. What is an example of machine-to- machine communication? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  11. What impacts have resulted from communication technology? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  12. You can now find out what is happening all over the world the same time events are taking place. Your knowledge of world events will help you decide who can best lead our country. How has communication technology affected our political process? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  13. The spread of information has led to an increase in education. Personal privacy has also been affected by communication technology. How has our society been changed by communication technology? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  14. The speed of news affects our stock market and other markets around the world. Most companies today have Web sites that advertise or sell their products. How has communication technology affected the world economy? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  15. Our environment is harmed when the materials used to manufacture communication equipment are not disposed of properly. Workers can be injured when they work with some of these materials. How has communication technology affected our environment? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  16. What is the future of computers? • People wonder whether computers might one day surpass humans. • Computers are constantly growing. Examples include AI, immobots, speech recognition, wi-fi, and distributed computing. EXIT MENU REVIEW

  17. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a computer program that can solve problems and make decisions ordinarily handled by humans. What is artificial intelligence? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  18. Graphic messages are determined by: Intended audience Medium used Purpose of message Nature of message How are graphic messages designed? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  19. Identify the message. Determine the layout. Create a camera-ready copy. What steps must a graphic designer take to develop an idea? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  20. Audio refers to sound. Your radio, MP3 player, and CD player are audio devices. Video refers to electronic images or pictures. Your TV, VCR, and DVD player are all video devices. What is the difference between audio and video technologies? EXIT MENU REVIEW

  21. All systems need to convert sound or images into a recordable signal. How are audio and video recorded? • These signals must be stored on some type of material. • The recordings are stored until playback. • Both audio and video can be converted into analog or digital signals. EXIT MENU REVIEW

  22. The producer is usually in charge of the entire project and oversees the planning. How is a video produced? • Principle workers include writers, directors, camera operators, performers, and the editor. • These jobs can be grouped into three categories: pre-production, production, and post-production. EXIT MENU REVIEW

  23. The Internet is a vast network of many computers linked together. Multimedia technologies such as, audio, video, text, graphics, photographs, and animation come together on the Internet. What is the Internet? EXIT MENU REVIEW
