  1. Solving Inequalities Using Multiplication or Division 6.2 • Goal • Solve and graph one-step inequalities in one variable using multiplication or division • Key Words • multiplication property of inequality • division property of inequality

  2. PROPERTIES OF INEQUALITY Multiplication Property of Inequality (c > 0) For all real numbers a, b, and for c > 0: If a > b, then ac > bc If a < b, then ac < bc Division Property of Inequality (c > 0) For all real numbers a, b, and c > 0: If a > b, then a÷c > b÷c If a < b, then a÷c < b÷c

  3. 1 EXAMPLE Solve . Then graph the solution. • Multiply by a Positive Number

  4. 2 EXAMPLE • Divide by a Positive Number Solve: 4x > 20 Then graph the solution.

  5. CheckpointMultiply or Divide by a Positive Number. • 6 < Solve the inequality. Then graph the solution • 18  2k • -21  3y

  6. PROPERTIES OF INEQUALITY Multiplication Property of Inequality (c < 0) For all real numbers a, b, and for c < 0: If a > b, then ac < bc If a < b, then ac > bc Division Property of Inequality (c < 0) For all real numbers a, b, and c < 0: If a > b, then a÷c < b÷c If a < b, then a÷c > b÷c

  7. 3 EXAMPLE Solve . Then graph the solution. • Multiply by a Negative Number

  8. 4 EXAMPLE Solve . Then graph the solution. • Divide by a Negative Number

  9. 4 EXAMPLE Solve . Then graph the solution. • Divide by a Negative Number

  10. CheckpointMultiply or Divide by a Negative Number. Solve the inequality. Then graph the solution

  11. CheckpointMultiply or Divide by a Negative Number. Solve the inequality. Then graph the solution • -14z -70
