Types of Mange • Mange is an inflammatory skin disease caused by tiny parasite mites on dogs. • There are two types of Mange: 1. Sarcoptic Mange 2. Demodectic Mange • Both have separate causes and symptoms.
Sarcoptic Mange • Sarcoptic Mange is a contagious disease caused by the scabies mite. • These mites burrow under the skin and cause intense itching.
Testing For Sarcoptic Mange • Rub the dog’s ear between your fingers and keep your eye on dog’s hindquarters. • If you see your dog reaching out his hind legs to scratch his ears, you can suspect that he may be suffering from Sarcoptic Mange.
Demodectic Mange • Demodectic Mange mites live in the hair follicles of your dog. • Demodectic Mange also has three types: • Localized Mange • Generalized Mange • Demodectic Pododermatitis
Testing For Demodectic Mange • A diagnosis of demodex in an adult warrants testing for hypothyroidism, heartworm disease, cancer, or immune deficiency.
Symptoms of Mange • Intense Itching • Hair Loss • Bald Spots • Swollen feet • Patches of red irritated bumps on you or family members.
Untreated Mange can Cause.. • Untreated Sarcoptic Mite infestations can lead to death. • Untreated Demodectic Mange can lead to secondary bacterial infections of the skin.
Treatment for Mange in Dogs • You will need to consult a vet for treating a dog suffering from mange. • Your vet can spot mange infections by spotting mange mites with microscope. • Sarcoptic mange is treated with insecticidal shampoos and sprays.
