  1. Canadian Space Agency Assets STG coordination meeting STG 2 Darmstadt Nov. 26-27, 2007 Yves Crevier yves.crevier@space.gc.ca Until Official STG rep is identified

  2. Canadian Space-based Assets • RADARSAT series • Active sensor – ideal for polar imaging activities • Flexible imaging configuration – high and low res., narrow and synoptic coverage, land and water surface • High frequency of revisit • VERY RICH Polar archive (North and South) • Other assets • Scisat • Anik F2 • Envisat ASAR and Meris – within the data policy framework as agreed with ESA

  3. Canadian Space-based Assets • RADARSAT series • RADARSAT 1 - 11+ year archive • RADARSAT 1 - New acquisitions to enhance the value of the archive – Satellite available until March 2009 • RADARSAT 2 – Use the Canadian Government data allocation for science activities under IPY • RADARSAT Constellation Mission – IPY Legacy • Focus on National and International consultation and coordination

  4. RADARSAT 1 Archive • Archive is "information rich" – as it was constituted by coherent data acquisition plans (multi-date, varying geometry, varying coverage, seasonally coherent) • Significant repeat coverage allows unique change detection, thematic analysis opportunity • Complimentary to existing data – optical framework, mapping databases, etc.

  5. RADARSAT 1 Background Missions

  6. Arctic Science Archive Processing(ASAP) • To increase the use of RADARSAT 1 archive under the IPY Framework and other national priorities • Focus on National and Int'l consultation process • Initiate the processing of a significant portion of the RADARSAT-1 Canadian archive - received through direct reception at GSS and PASS or recorded data that was played back in Canada • Preparation for RADARSAT-2 era; Canada maintaining leading position in space-based SAR remote sensing

  7. Frozen Baseline – F1 Phase 1 - Baseline Fine Mode. Northern Canadian complete coverage (20 000 scenes)

  8. Min and Max Sea Ice Extent Phase 2 - - Arctic Basin ScanSAR Sea-Ice Snapshots (364 scenes)

  9. 1. Coastal Beaufort, Mackenzie Delta 2. Churchill, Hudson Bay west 3. Ellesmere, Kane Basin 4. Devon, Ellesmere south 5. Nouveau Quebec, Hudson Bay east 6. Baffin south 7. Torngats, Labrador coastal north 8. Great Slave 9. Great Bear 10. NWT 11. Mackenzie Delta fine 12. Axel Heidberg 12 3 4 11 1 9 10 6 8 7 2 5 Canadian Supersites

  10. Canadian Supersites Phase 3 - Arctic Super-sites (4038 scenes)

  11. ASAP Database

  12. Continued Imaging Initiatives ASAP Follow-on phases • Antarctic Mapping Mission (MiniMAMM 2, …) • Polar Snapshots – Sea ice min and max series (2003 – 20…) • Canadian Arctic Land masses (InSAR) • Other supersites identified by the Canadian and Int'l communities • And others… • New data: Radarsat 1 and Radarsat 2 data products • Consultation for the definition of thematically intelligent archive for polar regions

  13. Coordination • Ensure collaboration to/for: • Harmonize processing for RADARSAT 1 archive (i.e. Alaska Satellite Facilities, KSAT) • Acquisition and planning coordination – Through National and International networks • Open data policy for science activities • Support the objective of WMO Space Task Group

  14. RADARSAT-1 Reception Coverage 2007 2006 Norway(2007) 2005 Tromso (1996) Russia(2007) Fairbanks (1995) Moscow(2004) Prince Albert (1995) 2004 West Freugh (1996) Kazakhstan (2)(2005) China (1998) Gatineau (1995) Turkey (2002) 2003 Japan (1998) Miami (2004) Korea (1998) Benevento(2006) Saudi Arabia (1998) 2002 Thailand (2000) Puerto Rico (2000) Singapore (1997) 2001 Malaysia (2003) Brazil (2001) 2000 Alice Springs (1998) 2 Transportable Stations (2000) Argentina (2002) 1999 1 Transportable Stations (2003) Hobart (1998) 3 Transportable Stations (2004) 1998 2 Transportable Stations(2005) 1997 McMurdo (1995) 1996 1995 • Data Reception Facilities: 35 (including 8 transportable stations) • Data Archiving Facilities: 23 • Actually under certification: 0

  15. Challenges • Data policy • Distribution framework for Radarsat-1: Commercial • Radarsat-2 owned and operated by MDA – use of Canadian Government Data Allocation • Restricted to science use – NO operations supported • Costs related to the data processing in the archive • Broad dissemination and return on investment

  16. Summary • RADARSAT data & products are available, contributing to Canadian and International goals for Polar sustainability, resources management, sovereignty, and science • Canadian EO satellite coordinated with global goals and data demand and supply. • National and Int'l consultation to guide strategic development of RSAT dataset and optimal use of its resources • Coordination with other Information Network managers and linkages
