Sustained Success: South Africa's Football Development Strategy Presentation

On 8 November 2011, SAFA presented to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport its vision for sustained national team success through football development. The overall objective is to be No. 1 in Africa at all levels by establishing a rich talent pipeline with systematic, well-funded structures. The National Development Framework outlines key areas such as player and women's development, youth talent identification, coaching standards, and infrastructure support to strategically enhance both men's and women's national teams. Lessons from past failures and corrective actions aim to boost management and ensure future success in international tournaments.

SETBACK: FAILURE TO QUALIFY AFCON 2012 Lessons Learned • Process failure • Check-list did not include formally studying rules and discussing them • No one person charged with this KPA • Technical failure • All made incorrect assumptions based on earlier CAF communications and did not check them • All made assumptions based on FIFA rules and traditional practice and did not check them • Ambiguities and problems with the Rules not clarified beforehand • Management and Support failure • Need to boost capacity in national team management • Need to involve Legal department in Rules and Regulations briefings • Need to boost training of SAFA Heads of Delegation • CAF Issues • Rules were ambiguously written and published late • Circular received prior to tournament confused matters • Application of rule in this instance led to fundamentally unfair result

CORRECTIVE ACTIONS • Apology to nation by President • Internal disciplinary measures concluded. • Change of Process • Allocation of responsibility for Rules to HOD: National teams. • Process of receiving, checking, work-shopping of Rules in place. • Boost of Management capacity • Employment of Assistant Manager, Senior National Team to be fast-tracked. • Training for Heads of Delegation. • Have formally asked CAF to review and change the rule for the future

  11. GETTING BACK ON TRACK • Win our qualifiers for 2014 • Prepare to win AFCON 2013 • Series of competitive friendlies during 2012 to ensure rise in Ranks and seeding for international tournaments. • Sustained and accelerated focus on development pipeline

  13. OLYMPIC PREPARATION • Camp for six months prior to Olympics • Series of international friendlies home and away • Work with SUSPI High Performance Centre • Work with SANDF on fitness programme

  14. London Olympics 2012 SA U23 Men’s team will be competing in the inaugural CAF U23 Championship in Morocco from November 26th to December 10th • 8 teams are participating • Two groups of 4 • Top 3 teams will qualify for the Olympic games • 4th placed team will play-off against an Asian team

  15. CHALLENGES • Olympic qualifying tournament lies outside of FIFA calendar • Player release from clubs difficult • Working with League on resolving matter
