  1. 1x-EV-DV Reverse Link Summary & Status • An ad-hoc group in 3GPP2 has been working on selecting a framework for the Reverse Link since May 01. • Five different Reverse Link proposals are being considered by various companies • “Winning” proposal may be a combination of those being considered • A number of additional proposals are being considered as component technologies that may be included regardless of which proposal is selected • Framework selection for the Reverse Link is targeted for Dec. 01, with all specification work targeted for completion to meet the May 02 deadline

Main Features of Reverse Link Proposals • Backward compatibility with IS-2000-1x • Shared packet data channel (fast scheduling) vs. autonomous scheduling (i.e., infinite allocation) as multiple scheduling options • Fixed vs. variable frame sizes (multi-frames are also possible) • Variable rate operation and congestion control • Control signaling on Forward Link to support Reverse Link • New control channels (w.r.t. IS-2000-1x) to enable fast RL operation • Adaptive Modulation and Coding • Up to 2.4 Mbps data rates in 1.25 MHz deployment bandwidth • Soft Handoff • Interference Cancellation • Physical Layer retransmission (e.g., Hybrid ARQ) • Quasi-Active State for packet data applications to improve power consumption • Statistical multiplexing (time/code domains) to improve capacity

Reverse Link Component Technology Proposals • Variable Rate and Congestion Control (either separately or jointly applied) • Spatial/Time Diversity (e.g., STS, MIMO) and antenna diversity at BS to improve performance and system capacity • Hybrid ARQ (e.g. Chase combining) and Adaptive Incremental Redundancy to improve performance • Spectrally/Spatially Efficient Spreading Codes to improve performance and capacity • Enhanced Reverse Access Channel (with Adaptive Modulation and Coding) for efficient transmission of short data packets

  4. Status of Reverse Link Proposal Evaluation • Performance results for the various proposals are being examined prior to reaching a framework solution for the Reverse Link • Merits of scheduling approaches (“fast” vs. “autonomous” scheduling) are being examined. A combination of both approaches is possible • Evaluation of RL proposals expected to be complete in Dec. 01 Status of Component Technology Evaluation • Performance results for various component technology proposals are being examined • Evaluation of component technology proposals expected to be complete in January 02
