  1. THE NERVOUS SYSTEM The control center of your body By: Connor Cox, Kimberly Mullins, and Megan Moore

  2. FUNCTIONS • The nervous system is a network of specialized cells that communicate information about the organism and the things surrounding it. • The Nervous system processes information and sends it to other parts of the body, causing reactions. • The nervous is the control center of the body. • This system accelerates muscles and glands.

  3. ORGANS • BRAIN • BRAIN STEM • EAR • EYE • NERVES IN BODY • OLFACTORY CELLS • SPINAL CORDS • TASTE BUDS

  4. BRAIN • The brain is an organ of thought and feeling: the controlling center of the nervous system , connected to the spinal cord.

  5. Brain Stem • Part of brain joining spinal cord. • The part of the brain between the spinal cord and the cerebral hemispheres.

  6. Spinal Cord • It connects a large part of the nervous system to the brain. • The spinal cord also acts as a minor coordinating center responsible for some simple reflexes .

  7. Nerves • Nerves are all over your body. They are the decision and communicating center of your body. They transfer messages to your brain every second. • The neuron is the functional unit of the nervous system.

  8. Sense Organs • Ear: The ears contain materials for both the sense of hearing and the sense of balance. • Eye: The eye is a device that focuses light. It receives ultraviolet light from objects and reflects them into images.

  9. Taste Buds • sensory organs that are found on your tongue • allow you to taste things • The tongue can taste things bitter, sour, sweet, and salty. • hairs called papillae send messages to the brain about how something tastes.

  10. Olfactory Cells • Also known as the sense of smell. • (Your Nose) • Detects chemicals in the air. • Chemicals dissolve about 7 cm above your nostrils, Where your sense of smell is produced.

  11. LINK OF ORGANS • All of the organs of the nervous system link together. The center of the organs is the spinal cord. • However, nerves are all around the body.

  12. LINK BETWEEN SYSTEMS • The Brain connects the nervous system and the endocrine system. • Even though the endocrine system works slower than the nervous system, they often work together to make our bodies function properly. • The brain sends impulses to the heart so that the heart will contract and pump blood through the body; connecting it to the cardiovascular system. • The respiratory system connects to the nervous system because the brain supervises the gas altitude of respiratory volume and blood and adjusts respiratory rate.

  13. DISEASE • A possible stroke can occur from the nervous system. A stroke happens when brain cells die because of the loss of blood flow. If the brain does not receive the blood needed, it has no oxygen. This makes the nerves not able to function and die quickly. • The victim might have died from a stroke, fallen, and hit her head on the table next to her.
