  1. On your desk: PRIDE Card ?? Pencil/Pen I.N. Bellwork 3/18/14 Welcome Back!!!! What is the climate of the state that you live in? Explain the climate using at least 5 descriptive words.

  2. Climate and Seasons

  3. Update your Table of Contents

  4. Climatology • The study of the Earth’s climate and factors that affect past, present and future climatic changes.

  5. Review: Weather vs. Climate YES!!! Examples in Arizona…. Is there a difference??? Climate- long-term average of weather patterns in a particular area. Weather- short-term variations in atmospheric conditions.

  6. Data used to describe Climate • Daily High and Low temperatures • Rainfall • Wind Speed • Humidity • Air Pressure

  7. Causes of Climate • Latitude- the distance N or S of the equator and is measured in degrees. • Controls the amount of solar radiation an area receives.

  8. Latitude and Longitude

  9. Latitude • Run horizontally and split the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. • Measured in degrees North and South of the equator. North Pole Lines of latitude are numbered from 0 degrees at the Equator to 90 degrees North at the N Pole Lines of latitude are numbered from 0 degrees at the Equator to 90 degrees South at the S Pole South Pole

  10. Longitude • Run vertically (the loooong way around Earth). • Measured in degrees East and West of the Prime Meridian. Lines of longitude are numbered from 0 degrees at the PM to 180 West in the Western Hemisphere Lines of longitude are numbered from 0 degrees at the PM to 180 East in the Eastern Hemisphere Prime Meridian

  11. By combining latitude and longitude any location can be pinpointed!

  12. A locations coordinates are written: (_____ ◦ N or S , _____ ◦ E or W)

  13. Quick Check:

  14. Practice…. Makes Perfect! (worksheet)

  15. On your desk: PRIDE Card Pencil/Pen I.N. Bellwork3/19/14 1. Use the map above to determine which city is located at these latitudes and longitudes. a. b. c. d. e.

  16. A reality show where teams race around the word working to uncover clues, perform challenges in order to be the first team to “check-in” at the pit stop! http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?v=W4JKWc-gwzE

  17. The Goal… • Use the map provided to determine the longitude and latitude of check-in locations. • Uncover clues and solve challenges to advance to the next leg of the race!! • Make it to the “Pit Stop” first and WIN $100,000!!!

  18. To receive the prize at the end you must arrive at the Pit-Stop WITH…. • I.N • Map • 2 pencils • 4 clues • 1 worksheet • BOTH team members

  19. Easton and Briley Period 1 Teams… Isaiah and Spencer B. Shane and Baylee Mathew and Ella Michael D., Cody and Grace Brayden and Kailee Connor and Maggie Spencer H. and Adam Zoe and Jacob Ashely and Dylan Jesse and Tyler Rebekah and Ally KJ and Abby

  20. Seth and Collin Period 2 Teams… Morgan and Abbi Kindall and Gioia Cayden and Guilliano George and Karli Nirari and Austin Jaxon and Gage Tom and Tanner Olivia and Ethan H. Brendan and Alli Fletch and Chloe Samantha and Logan Madison and Katelyn Connor and Jared

  21. Period 4 Teams… Justin and Zach Brendan and Dawsen Elija and Eddie Cory and Ethan Jordan and Angie Anissa and Corbin Isacc and Michael Dalyn and Emalee Tristan and Wyatt Chuck and Gabi Madison and Carter Charles H. and Guillermo Layla and Brody Ryan and Joshua Lenasia and Jack

  22. Period 5 Teams… Juliana and Lauren Sara and Austin David and Bethany Jon, Brigitta and Belle Brady and Maija Brycen and Elva Mitch and Nichole Meghan and Grace Isaiah and Michael Jasmin and Reagan Connor and Aidan Garrett and Jordon Lindsay S. and Samantha Chantel and Lindsay C. Dalton and Rylan

  23. Elias and Zoe Period 6 Teams… Tyler and Ryker Marc and Brian Dylan and Mason Mathew and Annelise DJ and Zach Jacob and Cole Kama, Javin and Jonathan Niko and Shyann Nicholas and Thomas Clayton and Hanna Mykah and Jacob

  24. On your desk: PRIDE Card Pencil/Pen I.N. iPad Bellwork3/20/14 1. What types of data are collected in order to determine an areas climate? • Daily High and Low temperatures • Rainfall • Wind Speed • Humidity • Air Pressure

  25. Different Climates around the world! http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?v=ZouWWVyz9v8

  26. 3 Climate Zones • Tropical Zone • Polar Zone • Temperate Zone

  27. Climate Zones Foldable • Front: • Describe the Zone • Glue on the globe and label with the Latitude the zone is found at. • Color in the zone on the globe • Inside: • List the Biomes Found in the Zone • Color and glue in the pictures of the organisms found there. Chapter 3- Pages 82-91

  28. What impacts climate? • Oceans • Mountain Ranges

  29. Oceans • Water heats up and cools down more slowly than land. • Temperatures near the oceans have moderate climates.

  30. Mountain Ranges • Temperatures decrease as you increase in altitude. • Higher elevations = lower temperatures.

  31. Changes in the Climate • Earth’s climate is constantly changing…. Short-term climate changes Long-term climate changes

  32. Long-Term Temperature Changes • Ice Ages- Times during which ice collects in high latitudes and moves towards lower altitudes. • Large amounts of water freezes, causing sea levels to drop. • The most recent ice age began 2 million years ago.

  33. Long-Term Temperature Changes • Volcanic Eruptions- send large amounts of dust, ash and smoke into the atmosphere. • This “shield” blocks the sun’s rays, which causes the Earth to cool.

  34. Long-Term Temperature Changes • Asteroid Impact- causes debris to shoot into the atmosphere. • What do you think the debris does??......

  35. Long-Term Temperature Changes • The Sun’s Cycle- The sun follows a 11 year cycle. It changes from it’s solar maximum to solar minimum. • Maximum- The sun produces a large percentage of high-energy radiation. • Minimum- The sun produces a low percentage of high-energy radiation.

  36. Long-Term Temperature Changes • Global Warming- the gradual increase in the average global temperature due to a higher concentration of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

  37. Short-Term Temperature Changes • Seasons- variations of climate caused by variations in daylight, temperature, and weather patters.

  38. Seasons • The seasons are caused by the tilt of Earth’s axis as it moves around the sun. • The Earth is tilted at 23.5 degrees

  39. Solstice-occurs when sun is directly overhead at latitudes 23.5 degrees north or south. • Summer solstice- June 21 in the Northern hemisphere. • Beginning of summer. • Winter solstice- December 21 in the Northern hemisphere. • Beginning of winter.

  40. Equinox- Neither hemisphere is tilted towards the sun. • -The lengths of daylight and darkness are approximately equal. • Vernal equinox- March 21 in the Northern hemisphere. • Fall equinox- Sept 22 in the Northern hemisphere.
