  1. Greenhouse Operation and Management

  2. Greenhouse Structures GOM1

  3. Objectives LESSON OBJECTIVE ENABLING OBJECTIVES • Compare and contrast types of greenhouse structures for a specific site and construction method • Describe the importance of interior greenhouse selections including interior layout, parts and controls for a greenhouse structure, etc. • After completing this lesson on Greenhouse Structures, students will demonstrate their ability to apply the concept in real-world situations by obtaining a minimum score of 80% on the Greenhouse Structures 3-D Model and Presentation evaluation. 01 02

  4. Key Term Harden off

  5. Why Greenhouses?

  6. What is the benefit of starting plants inside a greenhouse structure as opposed to outdoors? Do all of these structures look the same way?

  7. Objective 1Compare and contrast types of greenhouse structures for a specific site and construction method

  8. Structures, Frame Styles and Coverings

  9. Greenhouse Site Selection • No obstructions to the East or South • 0-5% slope • Access to water • Orientation is best with the ridge running from North to South

  10. Objective 2Describe the importance of interior greenhouse selection

  11. Interior Parts of a Greenhouse

  12. Layout Wholesale • Facilitate work flow so materials and labor can move smoothly • Maximize all available space to increase production and profit • Depends on… • Type of crop grown • How greenhouse will be used Retail • Efficient flow of materials; must also accommodate customer movement • Special displays • Cash register • Aesthetic shopping environment

  13. Benching • Sturdy enough to support adequate amount of plants • Raised benches need to provide for • Air movement • Water drainage • Space between plants to prevent spread of disease/insects

  14. Flooring • Accommodate equipment and work flow • Proper drainage • No bare ground exposed • Risk of pathogens • Difficult to provide proper drainage

  15. Layout, Benching, and Flooring • Benefits/pros • Drawbacks/cons • Potential cost • Printed image

  16. As a wholesale greenhouse operator, what combination of layout, benching and flooring would work best and why? As a retail greenhouse operator, what combination of layout, benching and flooring would work best and why?

  17. Additional Considerations

  18. Environmental Controls • Manual System • Owner physically moves settings • Automated System • Settings are triggered mechanically • Integrated Control System • Uses analog and computer systems and multiple sensors throughout the greenhouse

  19. For your wholesale greenhouse, what would be the best choices to make for heating, ventilation and cooling, and irrigation? For your retail greenhouse, what would be the best choices to make for heating, ventilation and cooling, and irrigation?

  20. Design Your Own Greenhouse

  21. Conclusion Recognizing various greenhouse structures and understanding their benefits and drawbacks is necessary when understanding greenhouse operations and their infrastructures. Gaining a better understanding of how to locate and design the exterior structure, interior layout, and environmental controls of a greenhouse will allow a producer to better meet specific crop needs. This understanding will also allow the grower to conserve energy using the best methods in the industry.

  22. Exit Card • What did you learn about greenhouse structures? • What questions do you still have about greenhouse structures?
