  2. IBM ISV Enablement Programs for Linux on System z • IBM has a number of programs that could assist ISVs with their enabling their solutions on Linux for System z. • Our main System z Linux ISV enablement portal is at: http://www.ibm.com/partnerworld/systemz/linux . • If the ISV's application currently runs on Linux on x86 architecture, it might be a prime candidate for our innovative "Chiphopper" program that combines technology, hardware access, and marketing for a complete enablement to Linux on System z and Linux on POWER, all in a no-fee offering to the ISV. • View http://ibm.com/isv/go/chiphopper for further details on this program. By far and way, if the ISV's application 'fits' Chiphopper, this is the fastest and easiest enablement method to bring it to the System z Linux platform. • A no-charge offering is the Linux Test Drive (30 or 60 days if ISV's application is using IBM middleware) - view http://www.ibm.com/servers/enable/site/testdrive/zseries/ for the details. • For additional length or time, or more detailed configuration requirements that the Test Drive does not supply, the fee-based Remote Development Program is also available for Linux on System z as well - specific Linux information for that program is at: http://ibm.com/servers/enable/site/testdrive/zseries/feebased.html . • A Roadmap for Linux enablements is also located on the Roadmap page : http://www-304.ibm.com/jct09002c/partnerworld/wps/pub/systems/z/technical/roadmaps .

  3. New Case Study Released – Marist College • Marist College exploits z/VM in its mainframe-based environment. It enables extremely high utilization of computing resources, simplifies maintenance and management of over 600 virtual servers, and increases utilization and capacity while reducing footprint. • http://www-01.ibm.com/software/success/cssdb.nsf/cs/DLAS-7DHHKR?OpenDocument&Site=swzseries&cty=en_us • Solution:Marist College recently upgraded their IBM System z900 to an IBM System z9®. The z9™ mainframe runs IBM z/OS® as well as IBM z/VM®, which enables high performance for the organization's hosted virtual servers, including Linux® machines. Storage for the z9 is being transitioned to two IBM System Storage™ DS8100 disk storage systems.

  4. New Novell Case Study, Baldor – SAP on Linux on z • Baldor Electric Company, located in Fort Smith, Arkansas markets, designs, and manufactures industrial electric motors, power transmission products, drives, and generators. With an expanding data center and frequent system outages, Baldor Electric migrated to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z to establish a more streamlined, highly available platform for its mission-critical SAP applications. The company consolidated its data center by 80 percent and reduced downtime costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Read the • http://www.novell.com/success/baldor_electric.html

  5. IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager V3.1 5648-PEZ for System z at NO CHARGE. • Customers can place an order for IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager V3.1 5648-PEZ for System z at no charge, do NOT select z/OS as the main operating system. Select either z/VM or Linux as the operating system. You can then order this as a stand alone product. Do not order it as part of a package • Energy control components built into the following IBM systems can be monitored and managed by AEM for Linux on System z, V3.1 as follows: • IBM Power Systems family provides hardware support for the monitoring of energy use. • POWER6™ processor-based systems provide hardware support for the management of energy use. • BladeCenter® and System x™ provide hardware support for the monitoring and management of energy use. • IBM System z10 provides hardware support for the monitoring of energy use. • Intelligent Power Distribution (iPDUs): IBM C13 DPI® PDU+ and IBM C19 DPI PDU+ provide support for monitoring the energy use of storage devices (DS3000, DS4000™, DS6000™, and nSeries storage control units) as well as System i™, System x, and System p™ servers when there is no native support available. The iPDU firmware version can be found at • AEM V3.1 application support is provided by the following System z product lines: • System z10 • System z9™ • zSeries® 990 • zSeries 890 • zSeries 900 • zSeries 800 Software requirements • AEM for Linux on System z requires IBM Director V5.20.2 and one of the following operating systems: • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4 • RHEL 5.0 and 5.1 • Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 9 • SLES 10 • The AEM V3.1 extension installer for Linux is RPM.

  6. Project Big Green – 2.0 (ECM) • One year ago IBM created Project Big Green, committing $1 billion a year to green technologies to help companies with these challenges; the System z10 EC, with its ability to dramatically reduce power consumption in the datacenter, is a powerful proof point. The recent new Green IT announcements demonstrate IBM's continuing leadership in this area, and provide a timely opportunity for us to consider the importance of the System z platform to this initiative. • Since our formal announcement in August of last year, we have received tremendous positive response from our clients, analysts and marketplace on IBM's public commitment to virtualize approximately 25% of our internal distributed infrastructure to the mainframe leveraging System z Linux.

  7. WEBCAST: High Availability Applications Using Disk MirroringSpeakers: Dr. Holger Smolinski, IBM Boeblingen Susanne Wintenberger, IBM Boeblingen Michael Daubman, IBM STG Lab Services • Date: June 25, 2008 • Time: 11:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time (New York), 10:00 AM Central Daylight Time • Duration: 75 minutes • Abstract: RAID 1 mirrored disks are usually used to prevent you from data loss in case of a disastrous error in a storage controller. In this webcast we will show how even transient failures of storage controllers can cause application outages. We will present a solution which augments RAID1 to also ensure application availability. The solution; available as an IBM Lab Based Service for RHEL Version 4 and 5 for System z; provides: • * A SW disk mirroring solution (like RAID1) which does not block I/O on transient outages of storage devices. • * Integration into the distribution to enables mirroring of root and swap file systems. • * Ability to IPL/Boot with partially available disk configurations • * Enhanced recovery support offering selective recovery for transient failures. We will also discuss how customers using SUSE SLES 10 can solve the same problems.

  8. z/OS and Linux for System z: Selecting the best SOA platform for youBroadcast date: July 9, 2008, 11 a.m., Eastern Daylight Time, 4:00 p.m. British Summer TimeDeveloped for: IT architects, integration architects, IT managers and operations managersTechnical level: Intermediate • In this teleconference, we’ll: • Discuss why companies are consolidating their server farms and running new workloads on System z • Explore methodologies to help you build an SOA infrastructure design on System z that meets your objectives • Use customer examples to discuss SOA architectural patterns • Review some criteria for evaluation of the operating systems on System z • Outline how to make architecture decisions for integration • Speaker: Bill Seubert, IBM System z I/T Architect • This teleconference will also be available for replay after the event. • Register now: http://www.ibm.com/software/os/systemz/telecon/9jul/index.jsp?tcode=108AF6BM&pcode=5x5
