  1. Parts of Speech Review Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, & Subject-verb agreement

  2. Nouns • Nouns name a person, place, thing, or idea • Nouns can be common or proper • Nouns can also be singular or plural

  3. Common Nouns • These are general words for people, places, things, or ideas • Common nouns are not usually capitalized • Examples: volleyball, dog, book

  4. Proper Nouns • Nouns that name a particular person, place, or thing • Proper Nouns are always capitalized! • Examples: • Number the Stars • Food Lion • North Carolina

  5. Singular • Refers to ONE person, place, or thing • Think of the word “single”

  6. Plural • Refers to MORE than ONE person, place, or thing

  7. Verbs • Verbs are sometimes described as action words • Verbs are also sometimes used as the state of “being”

  8. Subject-verb agreement • If the subject is singular…the verb is singular!!! • If the subject is plural…the verb is plural!!! • REMEMBER this rule!!!

  9. Adjectives • Modifies or describes a noun or a pronoun • What is a noun? • What is an example of a pronoun? • Adjectives answer these questions: • What kind? • Which one? • How many?

  10. Adverbs • A word that modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, or another verb • What is a verb? • What is an adjective? • Do adverbs always end in ‘ly’? • Adverbs will answer these questions: • When? • Where? • How? • To what extent?

  11. Review, review, review… • Study your notes on the parts of speech • Complete the quiz on the next slide and write down your answers on the sheet I provided • Have a parent sign your review sheet once you have completed your quiz • Your test is on Tuesday, October 2nd!
