How do you feel when you • Walk into a room full of strangers? • Need to talk to people you don’t know? • Go to parties or gatherings? • Represent our school to meetings? • Meet and talk to your mentor for the first time? • Attend interviews (for jobs, further studies)?
Levels of Communication Level 1 Small Talk Examples: “The weather is fine today.” “My name is Jenny. Nice to meet you.”
Levels of Communication Level 2 Facts Examples: “I am studying at Ying Wa Girls’ School.” “You like watching football ? Me too! “ “My favourite subject is Chinese. How about you?”
Levels of Communication Level 3 Share Opinions Examples: “I think we have to do more exercises if we want to be healthy.” “I agree with you that French fries is not a healthy snack.”
Levels of Communication Level 4 Share Personal Feelings Examples: “I am not too happy because I only got 70 marks in my English dictation last week.” “I am glad that you are willing to share with me your feelings towards this person!”
Elements of Successful Conversation • Be positive • Be a good listener • Know a lot of things • Start the conversation with a sincere praise • Ask open-ended questions
