  1. Notes: Mitosis and Cell Cycle

  2. Division in Eukaryotes • Two types of Cell Division for eukaryotes: • Mitosis and Meiosis

  3. Division in Eukaryotes • Mitosis (division of the nucleus)Occurs in organisms undergoing growth, development, and repair

  4. Division in Eukaryotes • Mitosis (division of the nucleus)Occurs in organisms undergoing growth, development, and repair • One cell division

  5. Division in Eukaryotes • Mitosis (division of the nucleus)Occurs in organisms undergoing growth, development, and repair • One cell division • Makes 2 new cells identical to the original cell

  6. Division in Eukaryotes • Mitosis (division of the nucleus)Occurs in organisms undergoing growth, development, and repair • One cell division • Makes 2 new cells identical to the original cell • Makes somatic cells • Makes diploid cell (2n)

  7. Division in Eukaryotes • Meiosis (gamete production) = Occurs during the reproduction of gametes (sex cells) • Two cell divisions

  8. Division in Eukaryotes • Meiosis (gamete production) = Occurs during the reproduction of gametes (sex cells) • Two cell divisions • makes 4 new cells with half the genetic material of the original

  9. Division in Eukaryotes • Meiosis (gamete production) = Occurs during the reproduction of gametes (sex cells) • Two cell divisions • makes 4 new cells with half the genetic material of the original • Makes sex cells

  10. Division in Eukaryotes • Meiosis (gamete production) = Occurs during the reproduction of gametes (sex cells) • Two cell divisions • makes 4 new cells with half the genetic material of the original • Makes sex cells • Makes haploid cells (n)

  11. Cell Cycle • CellCycle = A repeating cycle of events in the life of a cell

  12. Cell Cycle • Interphase= the period between cell divisions (made of 3 phases)

  13. Cell Cycle • Interphase= the period between cell divisions (made of 3 phases) • G1= the growth phase, a new cell grows to mature size

  14. Cell Cycle • Interphase= the period between cell divisions (made of 3 phases) • G1= the growth phase, a new cell grows to mature size • S = DNA is copied or synthesized to prepare for division

  15. Cell Cycle • Interphase= the period between cell divisions (made of 3 phases) • G1= the growth phase, a new cell grows to mature size • S = DNA is copied or synthesized to prepare for division • G2= the time when the cell prepares for division

  16. Cell Cycle • Optional**) G0= following G1 a cell can exit the cell cycle and prevent further cell division • Ex/ Developed nerve cells enter G0 so nerve cells can not divide to repair damage

  17. Mitosis Phases • Mitosis divides the cell’s nucleus in four phases. 1. Prophase: Chromosomes condense, nucleus breaks down, and spindle fibers form

  18. Mitosis Phases 2. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell

  19. Mitosis Phases 3. Anaphase: sister chromatids separate to opposite sides of the cell.

  20. Mitosis Phases 4. Telophase: The new nuclei form, spindle fibers break down, and chromosomes begin to uncoil.

  21. Mitosis Phases • Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm

  22. Sequence of Cell Cycle • G1, S, G2, Mitosis (M), Cytokinesis (C)

  23. Cell Cycle Brace Map

  24. Classwork • Cell Cycle Drawing pg 155 • Draw and label each phase • Mitosis Drawing pg. 156 • Name each phase • Draw and label cells at each cell • Describe each phase
