    1. An overview of Trade and Investment in Africa

    2. Global trade flows Export growth Africa has been lagging RoW in export growth (in terms of volumes), with growth lower than even developed countries

    3. Global trade flows Import growth Growth in Africas consumption demand driving imports, which is amongst the best performing regions

    4. African trade growth In value terms, Africa has seen significant growth in both exports and imports

    5. Africas changing partners Destination of exports As expected China has become a major trading partner But USA remains most significant individual export market for Africa

    6. Africas changing partners Source of imports Africa following RoW trend China becoming a major source of goods India becoming a significant exporter to Africa

    7. Intra-regional trade African countries trade far less with each other than other developing or developed regions

    8. Africas regional trade patterns - SADC SADC has more diversified exports than other African regions Impact of South Africa

    9. Africas regional trade patterns - ECOWAS Petroleum products dominate both regional and total trade Some evidence of regional trade in intermediate and final goods

    10. Africas regional trade patterns UMA and Egypt North African countries seem to trade regionally primarily in commodity goods, with little trade in intermediate goods

    11. Africas regional trade patterns - ECCAS Central African states experience very low regional trade, with total trade highly concentrated in a single primary commodity

    12. Africas regional trade patterns - COMESA Regional exports seem to be much more diversified than total exports, though major regional products are still mainly primary goods

    13. Global FDI flows Despite significant growth in FDI flows to Africa, region still receives lowest amount of FDI comparatively

    14. African FDI inflows Growth in FDI to Africa has been significant, though this has been concentrated in regions with significant primary commodities

    15. Which African countries receive most FDI? FDI concentrated in countries with significant petroleum resources

    16. Africa trade and investment what can we conclude? Commodity boom may hide the fact that African export volumes have not kept pace with the rest of the world (prices rising much more than volumes) Africa has seen significant real GDP growth, with this shown in Africas growth in demand for imports Imports are substituting local production to satisfy consumption demand As expected, China has become an important trading partner with Africa, while India has also seen significant growth in trade with Africa Intra-Africa trade is very low by world standards and focused on primary goods Agricultural exports for Africa seem to be low, with regional trade in agricultural products minor FDI to Africa has increased significantly but has seen a focus on countries / sectors with significant commodity resources, primarily petroleum
