Background • Set up in 1969, to allow doctors to work part time • Updated in 1999 • Organised by the Deanery for any doctor who has a need to work part time
OUTLINE • 52 sessions per quarter, evenly spread throughout the period, i.e. 4 sessions per week • Practice needs to be an ‘approved practice’ • Ideally 3 sessions per week minimum • Can be split over 2 practices if needed • Additional 2 sessions per week in ‘non-GMS’ work
DURATION • Initially 5 years • Can be extended to 8 years with Deanery approval • Under exceptional circumstances can be extended to 10 years
EDUCATION • Paid time for CPD • Quarterly Deanery study days • Financial assistance towards covering costs of courses etc
ANNUAL REQUIREMENTS • Participate in NHS appraisal/revalidation • Annual application form for continued membership on the scheme
SUPPORT • Deanery-newsletter, regular study days, small learning groups, educational support • Practice-educational supervisor
PAY • Salary scale is the same as BMA scale for salaried doctors • Practices are reimbursed by NHS England for each session worked • Deanery grant annually, towards expenses
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS • Working day should be convenient for retainee doctor, e.g. surgery times should fit in with childcare • Entitled to take holiday when suits their needs
PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS • Need to be approved • Can employ more than one retainer • Retainee should be allowed to attend meetings • Allow protected time with the nominated educational supervisor
THE FUTURE OF THE RETAINER SCHEME • SFE 2013 states NHS England area team must reimburse practices • Still unable to guarantee funding in South Yorkshire, but scheme thriving elsewhere in Yorkshire and the Humber • Longer term???

WHO IS IT FOR? • Qualified GP’s not working at all • Qualified GP’s working, but not in general practice • GP away from work as a result of ill health • EU GP’s
OVERVIEW • If more then 5 years out of general practice you will need a period of re-training • If between 2 and 5 years not working the recommendation to join the scheme may depend on individual circumstances, and some or all of the entry assessments • Before entry to the scheme must pass an entry MCQ and simulated surgery • 3-12 months • Funding stopped in 2006, but still limited number of places • Unclear what will happen in the future
