CONCEPT • QUESTION? • HOW DO YOU DESIGN A LIBRARY THAT ECHOES ITS COMMUNITY? • CONCEPT: • “SENSE OF PLACE” • ABOUT CONCEPT: • FIRST LIBRARY IN THE COUNTY OF CONTRA COSTA • ONE OF THE TWO LIBRAIES THAT DID NOT HAVE A PUBLIC LIBRARY • WALL OF GLASS: • WRAPS TWO SIDES AND JUTS OUTWARD • MESSAGE: HERCULES IS A VIBRANT, GROWING COMMUNITY • BRICK: • COURSES RUN VERTICALLY INSTEAD OF HORISONZAONTALLY • HISTORY: ECHOES THE CITY’S BRICK CALIFORINA POWDER WORKS DYNAMITE PLANT THAT SUPPLIED THE PACIFIC COAST WITH BLASTING POWDER FOR MINING AND RAILROAD WORK UNTIL 1914, LATER BECOMING HERCULES POWDER COMPANY; ONE OF THE WORLDS LARGEST DYNAMITE MANUFACTORING PLANTS.

LEED CERTIFIED [CONTINUED] • SKY GARDEA: BLENDS CULTURE WITH EXPRESSION • OVAL-SHAPED COURTYARD IN CENTER OF LIBRARY • INTERIOR IS COVERED WITH WINDOWS LOOKING OUT AT THE COURTYARD, PROVIDING THE SOUCRE OF NATURAL LIGHT FOR THE RAISED-CEILING INSIDE. • THEME: EASTERN HEALING-GARDEN THEME THAT PROMOTES SOCIAL AND MULTICULTURAL INTERACTION. • SEPARTES THE ADULT AND CHILDERN AREAS INSIDE THE BUILDING.
