There are 2 different types what are they and how do they differ? 6 List 3 important points about legal Aid in the UK?
2. Homework – Due Wed 24th Nov Research Legal Aid in the UK What exactly is meant by legal aid and why has it been in the news this week? Find out what types of people can get legal aid and for what particular types of legal cases? What types of legal cases are not covered by legal aid? Finally – How does legal aid in the UK compare with legal aid offered in other EU countries? NB: List your sources!!! LO: To recap on what we have learnt already in this unit.
3. The Youth Justice system What was done wrong in the Venebles and Thompson case? The child defendants should have been tried in a youth court which means a less intrusive environment with no access to the public or the media. The children’s names were officially released to the media after the trail and were already in the media during the trial. This should not happen with under 18’s. Many aspects of the case were aired in the media before and during the trial which meant a Fair trail did not take place. The children were not given a defence eg no evidence of home background aired in court. The children were given a minimum fixed sentence which is not supposed to happen with child offenders. Legal Rights on arrest: The right to know the reason for the arrest Right to inform someone of the arrest (1 phone call) Right to see a solicitor of their choice or the duty solicitor Right to see the Police Codes of Practice Special rights for Under 17’s The right to have an appropriate adult present. The young person is allowed to talk to the adult in private at any time. Learning Difficulties Police should only interview people with learning difficulties when an appropriate adult is present.
