  2. Introduction Source http://www.cknow.com/vtutor/NumberofViruses.html The first known computer virus was written in the mid-1980s Experts estimate 1 in 5 computers is infected with some type of virus. Over 800 new viruses are discovered each month By number, there are well over 103,000 known computer viruses (Source: Sophos) Only a small percentage of this total number account for those Viruses found in the wild, however. Most exist only in collections. With the increasing use of the Internet, it has become easier for virus to spread www.compvirus.co.cc

  3. What is Virus A computer program that can spread across computers and Networks by making copies of itself, usually without the user’s knowledge Create damage to the computer system "infected" It is not data Hides in other computer code without permission and does nasty or undesirable things You can only catch a virus by running a program, Anti-Virus www.compvirus.co.cc

  4. Types of Virus Example Example Trojan A program which appears to be Valuable but has an unexpected consequence Worm Computer Worms are reproducing programs that run independently and travel across Network connections www.compvirus.co.cc

  9. Virus Source • The four most common virus infections come from: • Today almost 87% of all viruses are spread through the internet (source: ZDNet) • File – A virus type that infects existing files on the computer (~40%) • Macro – A virus that runs as a macro in a host application such as the MS Office applications (~35%) • VBScript – A virus that uses Windows VisualBasic Script functionality (~10%) • Internet Worm – A virus that is primarily characterized by it’s replication across the Internet (~5%) www.compvirus.co.cc

  10. Evolution of Viruses 1979 - 1990s 1990s to 1998 1999 to 2001 2001 to today 57,000+ 500+ 20,000+ 103,000+ Third Wave first wave SecondWave fourth wave www.compvirus.co.cc

  11. Basic Virus defense • Don’t open files that you are not expecting • Many viruses automatically send files without the e-mail account owner’s knowledge. • Ask the sender to confirm unexpected files. • Suspect messages that appear more than once in your Inbox • You may receive the same e-mail from a virus repeatedly. www.compvirus.co.cc

  12. Basic Virus defense • Learn file extensions • Your computer will display both an icon and a file extension for files you receive. Open only file extensions you know are safe. • The following file types should never be opened: • .EXE • .PIF • .BAT • .VBS • .COM www.compvirus.co.cc

  13. Protect / Prevent Best way to protect yourself is to prepare your computer against viruses in advance. One way to protect you computer is to use updated anti-virus program. It is advisable to back up all your important files, putting them in an external drive or on the drive D of your system. You should be careful to scan your C drive and D Drive periodically to avoid any threat of virus • Knowledge • Proper configurations • Run only necessary programs • Anti-virus software www.compvirus.co.cc

  15. There are lots of viruses in the world and new viruses are coming up every day. There are new anti-virus programs and techniques developed too. It is good to be aware of viruses and other malware and it is cheaper to protect you environment from them rather then being sorry. There might be a virus in your computer if it starts acting differently. There is no reason to panic if the computer virus is found • It is good to be a little suspicious of malware when you surf in the Internet and download files. Some files that look interesting might hide a malware • Virus’s mission is to hop from program to other and this can happen via USB disks, Internet FTP sites, newsgroups and via email attachments. Viruses are mostly written for PC and Windows environments www.compvirus.co.cc
